    Open Access•Mónika Szente-Varga•ARTICLE•Acta Hispanica•2025

    Open Access•Mónika Szente-Varga•ARTICLE•Sport in History•2024

This essay will examine Cold War sport links between two relatively small-sized, satellite countries: Hungary and Cuba, via the activities of Hungarian coaches on the island. The investigation aims to find out the main reasons and objectives for the presence of Hungarian sport professionals on the i…

  • Constructing the future: Solidarity action in Nicaragua

    Open Access•Mónika Szente-Varga•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2023•References: 19

Hungarian solidarity action was organised in the second half of the 1980s to build an agricultural vocational school in Nicaragua. Even though Hungary and Nicaragua had special relations after the 1979 Sandinista revolution, the time of the construction calls the attention because it formed part of a period characterised by general disenchantment in solidarity actions towards the Third World as well as economic problems and the final years of soc…

  • Una nueva ola de regionalismo

    Open Access•Mónika Szente-Varga•ARTICLE•Acta Hispanica•2022

  • From the Normalization of Relations to Dwindling Interest and Indifference: Mexican–Hungarian Ties between 1974–1989

    Mónika Szente-Varga, Agustín Sánchez Andrés•ARTICLE•East Central Europe•2022•Cited by: 1

This article offers an overview of the political, economic, and cultural aspects of Hungarian–Mexican relations during the last 15 years of the Cold War. After a more than 30-year interruption, the normalization of diplomatic relations (1974) was made possible by a change in the foreign policy orientation of Mexico, in the context of improving East–West relations, in particular an improvement of US–Hungarian relations. Both sides planned to inten…

  • A Mismatch between Migrant Identities and Consular Representations. Migration from East Central Europe to Latin America, 1867–1945

    Mónika Szente-Varga•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration History•2021

This article analyses transatlantic migration from multi-ethnic East Central Europe in the period 1867–1945. Since ethnic belonging and political frontiers did not coincide, official identities did not necessarily correspond to personal identities. This became more pronounced in the migratory process, for there was a clear tendency of higher proportion of minorities among those who left. As dominating nations changed in the region, so did the eth…

  • Hungarian Football Coaches in Latin America in the Interwar Period

Mónika Szente-Varga•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2021

The aim is to shed light upon the intriguing – and what might seem at first sight mysterious – presence of Hungarian football coaches in the Americas in the interwar period. These years can be referred to as a Silver Age, which had preceded the success Hungary achieved in football in the middle of the twentieth century. The activities of football trainers in Latin America – such as Jenő Medgyessy, Gyula Bíró or György Orth – took place within a m…

  • Labor migration programs within the socialist bloc. cuban guestworkers in late socialist Czechoslovakia and Hungary

    Hana Bortlová-Vondráková, Mónika Szente-Varga•ARTICLE•Labor History•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 20

Cuba’s accession to the Comecon in 1972 opened an opportunity for the Socialist Bloc countries to involve citizens of the Caribbean island in their respective labor migration programs. Since the end of the 1970s, thousands of Cubans annually were coming to Czechoslovakia to work; since 1981, hundreds of them arrived annually in Hungary, too. The article contextualizes the labor migration program in both countries and offers groundwork on this top…

    Open Access•Mónika Szente-Varga, Amadea Bata-Balog•ARTICLE•Estudos Internacionais Revista de…•2021•References: 5

The exodus from Venezuela increased in intensity until the Covid-19 pandemic. Arrivals in Europe were significantly lower than in Latin America, but also grew and displayed a shift in composition, including a decreasing percentage of people with European origins. This study investigates migration from Venezuela to Spain, Italy and Hungary, in the 21st century. It begins with a detailed theoretical framework and then examines the particular migrat…

    Open Access•Mónika Szente-Varga•ARTICLE•Acta Hispanica•2020

    Open Access•Mónika Szente-Varga•ARTICLE•Secuencia•2020•Cited by: 1
