  • A phenomenological analysis of invisibility syndrome in formerly incarcerated Black men

    Drawing primarily on the construct of psychological buffer, the purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which racism‐related stress and ethnic identity are determinants of career aspirations. A total of 163 African American college students from a predominately White Midwestern university participated in the study. A moderation regression analysis was conducted.     Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to explore 10 African American men's perceptions of invisibility. Participants perceived invisibility as an extra unwarranted burden that is accompanied by feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and anger. Participants also coped with invisibility by finding safe havens within the Black community.     The potential relationships among religious behaviors, spiritual beliefs, and well-being were investigated. Specifically, a canonical correlation analysis was used to explore the extent to which a set of religious and spiritual variables correlated with a set of well-being variables of general happiness, marital satisfaction, and physical health.
