Psychological Dimensions of Physical Activity, Sport, and Technology
The current collection elucidates the complex and dualistic intersection of sport psychology, physical activity, and advanced technology (including wearables, exergames, and artificial intelligence). While performance is recognized as an emergent, context-sensitive phenomenon, its assessment and introspective experience are critically recalibrated by ubiquitous digital instrumentation. Initial contributions delineate technology’s role as a precis…
The Effects of Acute Stroboscopic Training on Tennis Serve Return Accuracy
The effects of a single stroboscopic training session on anticipating tennis serve direction were explored. Intermediate tennis players in both the stroboscopic training ( n = 16) and control ( n = 16) conditions completed 40 pretest and 40 post-test service video clips, prompting them to indicate the serve trajectory direction. Identical on-court training was provided for both conditions after the pretest, in which each participant was asked to …
Effects of Movement Improvisation and Aerobic Dancing on Motor Creativity and Divergent Thinking
Creativity is considered to be an embodied concept, where internal psychological and external behavioral processes are intertwined. Creativity enhancement programs often target the cognitive side of this bi‐dimensionality leaving the impact of motor interventions underexplored. To address this gap in the literature, we tested the effectiveness of two motor programs on motor creativity and divergent thinking ( verbal and figural ). A total of 92 c…

Arterial Stiffness and Cardiorespiratory Fitness Are Associated With Cognitive Function in Older Adults
Age-related cognitive impairment has been associated with arterial stiffening and decreased cardiorespiratory fitness. The aims of this cross-sectional study were to compare cognitive function domains and cardiovascular parameters in older adults (≥ 65 years old) with high and normal aortic stiffness (via carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, cfPWV) and to explore relationships among cfPWV, carotid intima-media thickness, cardiorespiratory fitness…
Non-numerical data as data: A positivistic perspective
In this paper, we describe our positive experiences integrating quantitative and qualitative inquiry in sport and exercise psychology. Asked to reflect among other topics, on the weakness and limitations of qualitative methods from a positivist standpoint, we found ourselves first, criticising our own quantitative methods, though questions were also raised in terms of a few qualitative research strategies found in the sport science literature. We…
Cross-cultural comparisons in exercise participation, attitude toward aggression and violence: Reported violent acts among young German and Israeli Students / Sportpartizipation, Gewalteinstellung und…
A large survey of German (IV = 3 403) and Israeli (N = 2 513) younger (age 11-14 yrs) and older (age 14-18 yrs) adolescents was conducted to reveal (a) their opinions and attitudes towards violence and aggression, (b) their personal engagement in aggressive and violent behaviors in and outside the school environment, (c) their attitudes toward physical activity, (d) their engagement in physical activity, and (e) the linkage between physical activ…
A comparison of the developmental experiences of elite and sub-elite swimmers: Similar developmental histories can lead to differences in performance level
The current study fills a void in the literature that investigates the factors required for elite athlete development. Previous studies have (a) illustrated psychological and physiological differences between elites and non-elites; or (b) described the psychological and physiological developmental experiences of elite performers. The current study augments these research bases by obtaining the recollections of 15 highly accomplished swimmers (i.e…

The Tutoring Process and its Manifestation in the Classroom Behaviour of Tutors and Tutees
Three case studies were conducted of seventh graders teaching mathematics to third graders, in place of their classroom teacher, applying the Learning Through Teaching (LTT) method. Audio and video recording provided information on tutoring sessions. Trained observers coded the behaviours of the tutors and tutees during the tutoring sessions and in their respective classes during mathematics and other lessons. The results show that when tutors ar…
Physiological and cognitive responses to cold exposure in 11–12-year-old boys
This study investigated the effects of cold and exercise in the cold on the physiological and cognitive responses of 11-12-year-old boys. Children were dressed in sweat suits and exposed to cold (CD, 7°C), cool (CL, 13°C), and neutral (N, 22°C) environments for 110 minutes, with 10 minutes of light exercise (1 watt · kg body wt -1 ) midway through the exposure. A 30-minute "recovery" in neutral conditions followed each session. Session order was …
Are Kibbutz Children Different From City Children in Locus of Control, Anxiety, and Persistence
The kibbutz ("kibbutzim" is the plural form) in Israel has a unique child-rearing system where children are reared primarily by a "caretaker" during both day and night. Previously, the method of investigating this unique rearing method consisted mainly of observation and surveys. Only rarely were psychometric methods applied. The purpose of the current study was to measure several personality traits of kibbutz children and to compare them to thos…
Rule- And Norm-Related Behavior and the Individual Psychological Crisis in Competitive Situations: Theory and Research Findings
Four modes of behavior considered contrary to expectations and all associated with rules and norms of competition are investigated in this study within the context of psychological crisis. These behaviors are against the rules of the competitive situation and are (a) either fair or unfair, and (b) either called or not called by the officials. Twent-eight basketball experts responded to a “rule- and norm-related behavior” questionnaire. The expert…
Test Anxiety, Sex, and Exam Type
This study investigated the relationships (a) among worry, emotionality, and a more global measure of state anxiety before three types of examinations (objective, physical performance, and subjective) given in three academic disciplines and (b) among the three anxiety measures and expected and actual outcomes for 146 men and 217 women (age: M = 23.72, SD = 3.33). Across all types of examinations women scored higher on emotionality and general sta…
Influence of Attentional Focus on Reaction Time
It was hypothesized that attention could be directed to the emphasized task regardless of its spatial location. 20 subjects performed a simple RT to a stimulus located in foveal vision and a simple RT to four surrounding stimuli set in the visual periphery. Importance of task was manipulated through instructions. Analysis of variance showed subjects had shorter RTs to the emphasized area regardless of its spatial location. The attentional demands…
