Psychologists as Anti-Racist Change Agents on Campus: “What We Do Is More Important than What We Say or What We Say We Believe”
Psychologists, based on their training in the science and practice of change, are well-equipped to make vital contributions to combating inequity and embracing social justice at colleges and universities. By examining the oppressive systemic contexts of higher education and reviewing models of change, this article provides psychologists with critical perspectives and practices to ensure a more transformative and anti-racist approach to change. We…

Item Response Theory in Scale Development Research: A Critical Analysis
As scale development researchers, we have followed Mallinckrodt and colleagues’ work over recent years with significant interest. The scale development process can be challenging and typically demands a large investment of time. However, the end of the process is rewarding when the resulting scale is psychometrically sound. Mallinckrodt, Miles, and Recabarren’s contribution in this volume of The Counseling Psychologist attempted to help integrate…

Integrating Service Learning and Difficult Dialogues Pedagogy to Advance Social Justice Training
The integration of service learning and difficult dialogues pedagogy is one avenue for enhancing counseling psychology social justice training. We provide an illustration of this integrative model including advocacy and systems perspectives, and propose that the model can be applied to other service learning foci within counseling psychology training. The article presents an ongoing project that provides counseling graduate students the opportuni…
Sexual Identity as a Universal Process
Counseling psychology research on sexual (orientation) minority issues: Conceptual and methodological challenges and opportunities.
This lead article of the special issue discusses conceptual and methodological considerations in studying sexual minority issues, particularly in research conducted by counseling psychologists (including the work represented in this special issue). First, the overarching challenge of conceptualizing and defining sexual minority populations is described. Second, the importance and value of scholarship about sexual minority issues are highlighted. …
Liberal and conservative political ideology, experiences of harassment, and perceptions of campus climate
The purpose of this study was to examine the relations among racial-ethnic group membership, political ideology (i.e., conservative and liberal), and perceptions of general campus climate (GCC) and of campus climate for racial-ethnic minorities (RECC). One hundred and thirty-six (136) undergraduate, graduate, and professional students participated in this study at a large public Midwestern university. A series of multivariate analyses of variance…

Development, reliability, and validity of the Measure of Sexual Identity Exploration and Commitment (Mosiec)
Four studies were conducted on the development and validation of the Measure of Sexual Identity Exploration and Commitment (MoSIEC). Exploratory factor analysis of an initial item pool yielded a 22-item measure with 4 distinct factors assessing commitment, exploration, sexual orientation identity uncertainty, and synthesis/integration. Exploratory factor analysis findings support the argument that sexual identity is a broad, multidimensional cons…

Scale Development Research: A Content Analysis and Recommendations for Best Practices
The authors conducted a content analysis on new scale development articles appearing in the Journal of Counseling Psychology during 10 years (1995 to 2004). The authors analyze and discuss characteristics of the exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis procedures in these scale development studies with respect to sample characteristics, factorability, extraction methods, rotation methods, item deletion or retention, factor retention, and mode…
Development, Reliability, and Validity of the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Knowledge and Attitudes Scale for Heterosexuals (LGB-Kash).
Four studies on the development and validation of the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Knowledge and Attitudes Scale for Heterosexuals (LGB-KASH) were conducted. Exploratory factor analysis of an initial item pool yielded 5 factors assessing internalized affirmativeness, civil rights attitudes, knowledge, religious conflict, and hate—indicating that heterosexual knowledge and attitudes regarding LGB individuals could be conceptualized as multidimension…
Sexual Identity, Sexual Orientation, Religious Identity, and Change: Is it Possible to Depolarize the Debate
On Becoming Allies: A Qualitative Study of Lesbian-, Gay-, and Bisexual-Affirmative Counselor Training
The authors present a qualitative analysis of a process by which a research team of counselors-in-training confronted their heterosexist biases while investigating heterosexual attitudes toward sexual minorities. Members of the research team discovered that it was essential to reflect on and evaluate their attitudes, assumptions, and biases before they could conduct scientific research about affirmative attitudes toward lesbian, gay male, and bis…
The Theoretical Orientation Profile Scale—Revised: A Validation Study
This study supported evidence of reliability and validity of the Theoretical Orientation Profile Scale—Revised (TOPS—R) scores. The TOPS—R was designed to measure theoretical orientation among counselors and trainees. Factor analysis yielded a 6-factor solution accounting for 87.5% of the total variance in the scale. The 6 factors corresponded to 6 schools of psychotherapy (i.e., psychoanalytic/psychodynamic, humanistic/existential, cognitive-beh…
Pathways to the Future: Analyzing the Contents of a Content Analysis
In this article, the authors offer their reactions to the content analysis of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) publications in counseling journals between 1990-1999 by Phillips, Ingram, Smith, and Mindes. The invitation to react to this important contribution was accepted as an opportunity to offer analysis of some of the important issues raised. The authors attempt to highlight critical points made by Phillips et al., extend the analysis offered…
Heterosexual Identity Development: A Multidimensional Model of Individual and Social Identity
This article builds on earlier conceptual models of identity development to propose a model of heterosexual identity development. A review of the existing literature on majority and minority group identity development, heterosexuality, and other relevant foundational literature is provided as a rationale for the proposed model. Based on an analysis of the strengths and limitations of the existing literature, the authors propose a preliminary mode…

Multicultural counseling competencies: Verbal content, counselor attributions, and social desirability
This study investigated the validity of 2 instruments designed to measure the multicultural counseling competencies (MCC). Fifty-five counselors participated in a counseling simulation involving a videotaped portrayal of a female Mexican American client at a predominantly White university. Counselors made attributions about the causes of the client's problem and completed a self-report MCC scale and a social desirability scale. Independent judges…
Influence of Racial/Ethnic Membership and "Therapist Culture" on Therapists' Worldview
The authors investigated 2 competing hypotheses related to therapists' worldview and therapists' race/ethnicity: (a) whether therapists of different racial/ethnic groups differed on worldview reflecting group membership, and (b) whether therapists were similar to each other on worldview reflecting membership in a "therapist culture." Results indicated that therapists shared similar worldviews regardless of group membership, and differences found …
The Vocational Development of Non-College-Bound Youth: Counseling Psychology and the School-to-Work Transition Movement
Due to inadequate preparation for employment and lack of assistance in making the transition to work, many youth struggle entering the labor market, are unemployed, or flounder in jobs without opportunities for advancement. The school-to-work transition movement, exemplified by the School-to-Work Opportunities Act of 1994, is designed to address the career development needs of non-college-bound youth. However, despite the fact that counseling psy…
