Impacts of a STEM-Focused Summer Camp on Postsecondary Aspirations for Rural Appalachian High School Students
Out-of-school experiences are important opportunities for career and educational development, especially for underserved students. This study explored the experiences of rural Appalachian high school students who attended a STEM-based summer camp and the impacts on their college and STEM attitudes and beliefs. Grounded in Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT; Lent et al., 1994 ), the camp provided hands-on learning experiences, mentorship, and ca…
Historically underrepresented students: Influences of rurality, parent education level and family income on graduate school intentions
Introduction Despite increasing rates of graduate school attendance, students from historically underrepresented backgrounds enroll in graduate programs at lower rates than their peers. Although there is a growing body of research on current graduate students' perspectives on what impacted their decision to pursue graduate education, few studies have examined the intention to pursue graduate education specifically among second- and third-year und…
The Assessment of Post-secondary Supports: A New Measure of an Understudied SCCT Construct
We investigated environmental supports, an understudied aspect of Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), with rural Appalachian youth, an understudied population. We developed a new measure of proximal influences that bolster the pursuit of postsecondary education, the Assessment of Postsecondary Supports (APSS). Across 3 studies, we develop and validate the new measure, finding strong internal consistency and construct validity. Moreover, scores…
“It Felt Like a Little Community”: Supporting Rural Appalachian College Students
Students from rural Appalachian regions often face increased career development barriers within university spaces. As part of an NSF-funded program, we provided diverse, structured supports for a group of STEM majors from rural Appalachian backgrounds. We utilized narrative inquiry to interview 10 Program participants, which allowed us to explore which supports they described as impactful, including graduate student mentors, their fellow program …
Examining Perceived Multicultural Counseling Competence and Negative Attitudes Toward the Arab American Population
The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the relationship between professional counselors' general multicultural competence and negative attitudes held toward Arab Americans. Participants (N = 124) completed a survey, and a series of correlational, stepwise, and multiple regression analyses was conducted. Results indicated that counselors displayed higher levels of multicultural awareness than of multicultural knowledge. Furtherm…
Using Narrative Therapy to Assist College‐Age Latino Immigrants
Latinos represent a large percentage of the immigrant population currently entering the United States. These immigrants may face mental health issues related to their immigration and acculturation experiences, leading to a need for counseling. The authors introduce narrative therapy as an appropriate treatment modality for college‐age Latino students
Work and Career Experiences of Men from Families without College Experience
A dearth of research exists exploring the career and work development of adult men and the influence of family-of-origin on that development. In this qualitative study, the researchers used a phenomenological approach to examine the career and work experiences of men whose parents have no education beyond high school and the influences of family on these experiences. We describe five constituents: (a) what work is like; (b) preparation/education;…
