Decolonial Conversations in Posthuman and New Material Rhetorics
This is an excellent, well-constructed set of essays focused on the intersection of decoloniality, the posthuman, and new materialist rhetoric. While each essay focuses on different topics, the central themes are consistently covered throughout, making this a more unified set of contributions than one might otherwise find in an edited volume. The text includes a Foreword, an introductory essay by the co-editors, and eight individual essays. The a…
Ideology’s Absent Shadow: A Conversation about Rhetoric
We have been asked to engage in a conversation about the current role of ideology—as critique, as rhetoric, as a framework within which academics operate. Our approach will not seek to write the history of rhetorical critique from an ideological perspective, nor work from extant literature as one might in a traditional research essay. Still, we reference ideas emanating from that literature; instead of the normal “source citation in text,” we wil…
Xi Jinping's keynote in the Belt and Road Forum: A pentadic cartography
In this essay, we utilize pentadic cartography to analyze Xi's keynote speech in the Belt and Road Forum in May 2017. Following the steps offered by Anderson and Prelli, we first identified the five pentadic terms in Xi's speech and then located two potential mappings with different featured ratios: agency-act in the first mapping and scene-agent in the second. Examining the two potential mappings of Xi's keynote, this paper argues that by constr…
China’s open letter: A rhetorical analysis of identity creation
In this paper, we utilize a rhetorically grounded textual analysis to study the Open Letter, the first publicized text sent out from the Central government to all the Party and Communist Youth League members on 25 September 1980. By reading through the text, we identify three individual figures – the ‘people’ as ‘the origin of problems,’ the people as ‘reasonable and considerate,’ and those charged with advocating compliance as ‘active propagandi…

Research in Rhetoric” Revisited
This essay begins with a brief review of past research in rhetorical theory and criticism. Attention then turns to an examination of two present issues—big rhetoric and the critique of postmodernism—that influence rhetoric's prospects. The essay closes with a consideration of the vibrancy and vitality represented by recent scholarship in the Quarterly Journal of Speech. The diversity and sophistication of current scholarship bode well for rhetori…
English or perish: How contemporary South Korea received, accommodated, and internalized English and American modernity
This paper discusses the positionality of English in South Korea as a form of symbolic capital that represents the discursive power of Americanism and East Asian Social Darwinism. By employing Bourdieu's and Foucault's theoretical orientations, this paper traces how South Korean linguistic policies to incorporate English loan words coincide with South Korea's struggle to face its historical challenges from a pre-modern to a modern postcolonial so…
Rhetorical studies as reduction or redescription? A response to Cherwitz and Hikins

Critical rhetoric in a postmodern world
Critical rhetoric: Theory and praxis
This essay sets forth a theoretical rationale for a critical rhetoric and presents eight "principles"; which, taken together, orient the critic toward the act of criticism. The theoretical rationale encompasses two forms of critique, styled as a critique of domination and as a critique of freedom. Both have in common an analysis of the discourse of power as it serves in the first case to maintain the privilege of the elite and, in the second, to …
The historiographical dilemma in Myrdal's American greed: Rhetoric's role in rescuing a historical moment
In An American Dilemma (1944), the Swedish economist Gunnar Myrdal argued that race relations in America would improve because the American Creed, democratic liberalism, created a dilemma between existing racial practice and the national ideology. The resulting dilemma, he argued, disposed white America to gradual, progressive change. Not only did Myrdal's value‐laden sociology find its way into American jurisprudence through footnote 11 to Brown…

Archbishop Whately: Human Nature and Christian Assistance
Richard Whately, Archbishop of Dublin (1831-1863), has been characterized as a representative of the Broad Church movement of the early to mid-nineteenth century. Convinced that the Church of England's sacraments and liturgies, indeed its very structure, should correspond to the times and not to some ancient formulary, Whately argued continuously for a general reformation of its rules and regulations and for a separate church body to arbitrate di…
