  • Exploring the Cosmos: Unraveling Cusanus’ Metaphors

Open Access•Elizabeth Brient, Viki Ranff et al.•BOOK•Exploring the Cosmos: Unraveling…•2025

The works of Nicholas of Cusa (1401–1464) distinguish themselves by an extensive range of metaphors spanning from things and circumstances of everyday life and aspects of the natural world to cosmological phenomena and more abstract geometrical and mathematical images. Many of these metaphors challenge the reader due to their often unusual and daring combination of elements, which appear to be semantically incongruous or remote from each other. I…

  • Exploding Metaphors: Reflections on the Methodology of Cusanus’ Divine Metaphorics

    Open Access•Elizabeth Brient•CHAPTER•Metaphor Papers•2025

This paper will highlight Cusanus’ use of what Hans Blumenberg has termed “exploding metaphors” for God. I first will contrast explosive metaphors with standard analogical or mapping metaphors. Analogical, or mapping, metaphors aim to elucidate or situate something opaque, elusive or unfamiliar by referring it analogically to something already well known or familiar. Explosive metaphors do not aim to elucidate in this way. They do not aim to prod…

  • The Immanence of the Infinite: Hans Blumenberg and the Threshold to Modernity

Albrecht Classen, Elizabeth Brient•ARTICLE•German Studies Review•2003

Most scholars would agree that there is an epochal threshold between the world of the Middle Ages and the modern world. Agreement on the nature and dynamic structure of that threshold is harder to come by. Hans Blumenberg's original and compelling account of the transition from medieval to modern, given in his 1966 work The Legitimacy of the Modern Age, has received wide attention. Elizabeth Brient begins her own account of the transition with an…

  • Hans Blumenberg and Hannah Arendt on the "Unworldly Worldliness" of the Modern Age

Elizabeth Brient•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of Ideas•2000•Cited by: 5

In attempting to describe and respond to the dominant ethos of the modern age one is quickly confronted with a startling and seemingly intractable paradox: the age which has defined itself by the very intensity of its "this worldly" orientation is at the same time haunted by an ever growing sense of world loss, of the Unheimlichkeit of modern reality
