  • From Guardianism to Postmodernism: Historiography and the Interpretation of Canadian Political Culture

    Colin D Pearce•ARTICLE•Southern Journal of Canadian…•2015•References: 11

This article seeks to go some way toward shedding light on a certain dimension of Canadian intellectual history, specifically that dimension wherein the changing theoretical approaches to the phenomenon of Canadian political culture is the core subject matter. Canadian political culture will be defined here as that collation of ideas, principles, thoughts and opinions which foster the establishment and continuation of a set of political structure…

    Open Access•Colin D Pearce•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Science Technology &…•2011

This article attempts to assess the claim that the unum necessarium in our time is the general dissemination of scientific knowledge because liberal civilization or the “good society” cannot be had in the presence of traditional religion and “metaphysics.” The paper attempts to place this claim in the context of continuing globalization and related questions such as 9/11, Fundamentalist Islam, Sino-Western relations, “pop” atheism and the prospec…

Reforming Liberalism: J. S. Mill's Use of Ancient, Religious, Liberal, and Romantic Moralities. By Robert Devigne. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2006. 320p. $45.00. In this scholarly book, Robert Devigne links John Stuart Mill to the aporia of the Platonic dialogues, the romantic expressivism of Kant and Coleridge, and the great tradition of British empiricism that it was Mill's purpose to reform. In so doing, Devigne introduces us to the gre…

  • Lord Brougham's Neo-Paganism

Colin D Pearce•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of Ideas•1994

It is the purpose of this essay to look at Lord Brougham primarily as a philosopher and, speaking loosely, theologian. It seems fair to say that the puzzle of Brougham's thought cannot be put together without such a consideration. I shall argue that Brougham is the kind of liberal thinker who rejected the Christian moral teaching while refraining from a frontal assault on Christian Revelation, and who opted instead for a rational theism, derived …

  • Egerton Ryerson's Canadian Liberalism

    Open Access•Colin D Pearce•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Political…•1988•References: 15

This article seeks to provide an overview of the political thought of Egerton Ryerson (1803–1882), the influential political controversialist and educational reformer of nineteenth-century Upper Canada. It attempts to unravel Ryerson's thought in such a way as to go beyond earlier interpretations which have insisted that, despite the presence of certain countervailing reformist tendencies in his politics, Ryerson was at bottom a thorough conserva…
