Changes in Canadian Journalists' Views about the Social and Political Roles of the News Media: A Panel Study, 1996–2003
This article presents the findings of a panel study of Canadian journalists, focusing on changes in their views about the social and political roles of the news media between 1996 and 2003. The results reveal substantial changes in journalists' views over the seven-year period. In particular, the analysis documents an erosion of the importance journalists attach to core roles of Canadian journalism, such as accurately reporting the views of publi…
Millennium Blues: The 1997 Southam Lecture
This presentation addresses the problems of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), situating them within the broader framework of the decline of public service, that is, both the concept of public service and the institutions which embody it. Using the CBC as an example -- and interpreting it in terms of the movement towards globalization -- this paper analyzes the mechanisms which lead to the dismantling of national public services. Finall…
Québec Studies Le Devoir: Un Avenir Quitte ou Double
During the 80's, LE DEVOIR, the only independent daily newspaper in Québec, has seen a decline in its circulation and started to accumulate deficits. For some, the institution, once identified as "the conscience of Québec", was in jeopardy. Its financial problems were linked to the general economic conditions and the recession. Also, they were not different from problems encountered by the press around the world, especially the "quality press". B…
