Loyalty and Lobbying: French-Canadian Delegates in London, 1763–1840
This article examines the individuals who came to London in order to lobby the imperial authorities in favour of the expansion of French-Canadian rights from the 1763 Treaty of Paris to the 1840 Act of Union and who were delegated by a significant body or institution within French Canada. Early efforts were centred on the expansion of religious rights and the perpetuation of Quebec’s legal and social institutions, including French civil law and t…

Conservative Crossroads: Anti-Americanism and Anti-modernism in French Canadian Intellectual Discourse, 1891–1945
America has generated a great deal of thought and writing in Quebec, but this commentary has never possessed the obsessiveness and anxieties that have characterized English Canadian writing on the United States. Yet both English- and French-speaking Canada share a vigorous and long-standing anti-American tradition. Indeed, from the eighteenth century to the present day, leading French Canadian writers and intellectuals have offered sweeping conde…
Thomas Chapais, loyaliste1
Prejudice and Pride: Canadian Intellectuals Confront the United States, 1891-1945
As a country with enormous economic, military, and cultural power, the United States can seem an overwhelming neighbour - one that demands consideration by politicians, thinkers, and cultural figures. Prejudice and Pride examines and compares how English and French Canadian intellectuals viewed American society from 1891 to 1945. Based on over five hundred texts drawn largely from the era's periodical literature, the study reveals that English an…

Lionel Groulx and Franco-America
Recent work on the intellectual history of Franco-America (2) has revealed the richness and complexity of the Franco-American variant of traditional French Canadian nationalism, which scholars generally refer to as l'ideologie de survivance. Centered on Roman Catholicism, the French language and culture, and a loose conception of race francaise, this ideology was largely conditioned by the evolution of French Canadian thought. Indeed, the constan…
