Ethics in economics - not ethics and economics: Guidance for researchers
Economics imperialism: Ambrosino, Cedrini, and Davis reply to Heisse
In responding to Heisse’s comments in this journal on our article “Today’s economics: one, no one and one hundred thousand” (2024), we clarify that we do not believe economics is already pluralistic, nor that heterodoxy is being taken seriously by the mainstream. As against Heisse’s “everything holds together” thesis, we argue that various factors—including the transformative impact of other disciplines—are bringing about changes in economics, wh…
Economic Theories, Protagonists and Facts: Collected Essays in the History of Economic Thought
This book is about the ideas and theories of those individuals who created the distinctive Cambridge economics tradition: Ricardo, Keynes, Kahn, Kaldor, Sraffa, Bharadwaj, Robinson, and Pasinetti
Du Bois and Veblen’s Concepts of Relative Position: Common Ground for Stratification Economics and Institutionalist Economics
W.E.B. Du Bois and Thorstein Veblen employed the concept of relative position. Du Bois’s thinking reflects how for Stratification economics people’s relative positions explain racial discrimination and segregation. Veblen’s reflects how for Institutionalist economics people’s relative positions explain the role institutions have in the evolution of the economy. Racism in the United States marginalized Du Bois’s contributions, leaving a divide bet…
Economics: Pluralism in Times of Fragmentation, and the Chances of Polycentrism
Expanding black reparations with human and social capital investments
Disadvantaged social groups in the US suffered disproportionately in the covid pandemic and the Great Recession, worsening high levels of inequality associated with their post-1980 declining intergenerational income mobility. For black Americans, this reflects the long history of racial discrimination beginning with slavery. Reparations paid to descendants of enslaved individuals to eliminate the black–white wealth gap is a step toward addressing…
Emerging engagement between philosophy and philosophy of economics: Parfit, Simon, and Sen
Reflections on the History of Economics Society at Fifty: Losing Our Way
The task given to me for this issue was to discuss the history, challenges, and accomplishments of the History of Economics Society (HES) as I see them from my vantage point as a past president. I frame my remarks in terms of changes I believe have occurred in how our field has been pursued in the society since I became involved
Today’s economics: One, no one and one hundred thousand
The paper employs the sense and structure of a famous novel by the Italian writer Luigi Pirandello, One, No One and One Hundred Thousand (Uno, nessuno e centomila), of 1926, to reflect upon the recent past, current status, and possible future appearance of economics. From an open/closed system perspective, the paper explores economics in relation to other social science disciplines in the epoch of economics imperialism, when it could reclaim a un…
Economics Imperialism and Economic Imperialism: Two Sides of the Same Coin
We argue that in a core-periphery economic world economics imperialism as advanced by the postwar Chicago School and economic imperialism led by the economies of the north are two sides of the same coin. We first review the parallelism between postwar capitalismâ€TMs core-periphery expansion of the north into the south and the Chicagoâ€TMs theory of economics imperialism. We then distinguish four forms of relationships between different disciplin…
Managing Contagion: Covid-19, public health, and reflexive behavior
This paper characterizes a pandemic as a kind of contagion, and describes a contagion as a two-level, two-direction, reflexive feedback loop system. In such a system, expert opinions for managing a pandemic can act as self-fulfilling prophecies due to how they influence collective belief formation. However, when multiple experts produce multiple expert opinions that act as self-fulfilling prophecies, this can fragment a society’s response to a pa…
Towards a Reentry Mobilities Assemblage: An Exploration of Transportation and Obligation Among Returning Citizens
Transportation has been identified as one of the major barriers to successful reentry for prisoners released to community in the United States. We foregrounded transportation and mobility in our design consistent with the new mobilities paradigm and investigated the mobility needs of returning citizens from the perspective of service providers and employers in Dallas, Texas. We interviewed 17 participants who directly served returning citizens in…
A Contextualist Approach to Health Economics
This paper departs from the standard abstract economics approach to health economics to develop a specifically contextualist approach to the subject emphasizing social and historical circumstances affecting health provision. Following Polanyi, it sees the economy as socially embedded and economic relationships as social relationships. The paper critically examines Grossman’s natural science utility maximization explanation of people’s demand for …

Transportation Barriers to Successful Reentry among Returning Citizens: A Qualitative Interpretive Meta-synthesis
Over 600,000 individuals return to United States communities from prison each year. Transportation has been identified as a major barrier to successful reentry. Applying qualitative interpretive meta-synthesis to achieve a deep understanding of reentry transportation obstacles, 11 articles with 362 male and female participants were identified. Two themes emerged from our analysis: (1) “Transportation connects complex obligations,” highlighting th…
Change and Continuity in Economic Methodology and Philosophy of Economics
Essays in Keynesian Persuasion by Maria Cristina Marcuzzo
A road not taken? A brief history of care in economic thought
Care is central to the human experience and part of the social provisioning process. Adam Smith recognised this, associating care with sympathy. Later contributions in the political economy tradition also provide scope for an analysis of care, but none as developed as Smith’s. With the emergence of the current mainstream, care is marginalised. Kenneth Boulding’s analysis provides an opportunity to interrogate care in the economy, but he fails to …
The status of the concept of identity in economics
The subject of this special issue of the Forum for Social Economics is ‘Identity, Institutions, and Power.’ As an introduction and as background for how the papers in the issue address this complex subject, I briefly discuss the contested status of concept of identity in economics. Just as economics as a whole is contested in regard to its theories, goals, and methods, so is the interpretation of the concept of identity. I close with brief commen…
Ethics and Economics: A Complex Systems Approach
This chapter examines the nature of ethics and economics as a single subject of investigation, and uses a complex systems approach to characterize the nature of that subject. It then distinguishes mainstream economic and social economic visions of it, where the former assumes that market processes encompass social processes, and the latter assumes that market processes are embedded in social processes. For each vision, strong and weak theses are …
Stratification Economics as an Economics of Exclusion
Economics and economic methodology in a core-periphery economic world
This paper uses a core-periphery distinction to characterize contemporary economics, economic methodology, and also today’s world economy. First, it applies the distinction to the organization of contemporary economics through an examination of the problem of explaining economics’ relations to and boundaries with other disciplines. Second, it argues that economics’ core-periphery organization is replicated in a similar organization of the use and…
Agent-Based Modeling’s Open Methodology Approach: Simulation, Reflexivity, and Abduction
This paper argues that agent-based modeling’s innovations in method developed in terms of simulation techniques also involve an improvement in economic methodology. It shows how Epstein’s generative science conception can be seen as departing from conventional methodological reasoning, and employs what I term an ‘open’ rather than ‘closed’ approach to economic methodology associated with the roles that reflexivity, counterfactual reasoning, and a…
Sraffa on the Open Versus “Closed Systems” Distinction and Causality
In his 1931 unpublished “Surplus Product” manuscript Sraffa used an open–closed distinction to explain the relationship between the “economic field” and distribution. This chapter examines Sraffa’s thinking in this regard, and shows how it allowed him to resolve a problem he encountered in his early objectivist representation of commodity production in economies with a surplus. The chapter argues that Sraffa adopted a view different from Bertalan…
Is Mainstream Economics a Science Bubble
This article uses George Soros’ theory of boom–bust cycles to argue that mainstream economics, as built on Samuelson’s Foundations, followed a similar boom-bust cycle. It underwent a reflexive, positive feedback pattern of development before 1980 followed by a reflexive, negative feedback pattern of development after 1980, making it a science bubble. The positive feedback pattern was associated with the ‘misconception’ that when economics is fram…
Transformation Without Paternalism
Human development is meant to be transformational in that it aims to improve people's lives by enhancing their capabilities. But who does it target: people as they are or the people they will become? This paper argues that the human development approach relies on an understanding of personal identity as dynamic rather than as static collections of preferences, and that this distinguishes human development from conventional approaches to developme…
Identity and Individual Economic Agents: A Narrative Approach
Is Trade Liberalization an Important Cause of Increasing U.S. Wage Inequality? The Interaction of Theory and Policy
The majority of mainstream economists believe that globalization and trade liberalization have had a minor role in increasing U.S. wage inequality. A minority argues that capital mobility and outsourcing indicate a larger effect. This paper first surveys these views, and then argues that how we understand the policy consequences of trade liberalization helps determine the character of our analysis of the issue itself. Thus, a shift in policy pers…
Adam Smith's Influence on Hegel's Philosophical Writings
Historians of economics and philosophy have noted Georg Wilhelm Fredrich Hegel's debt to Adam Smith and have suggested that Hegel's analysis of civil society rests on a Smithian foundation. Laurence Dickey recognized that "Hegel's interest in the Scots coincided with the late eighteenth-century German interest in the relationship between socioeconomic processes in history and the development of civil institutions" (Dickey 1987, p. 194). Georg Luk…

Making Service-Learning Partnerships Work: Listening and Responding to Community Partners
This study explored community partners' perspectives regarding the motivations and barriers to engaging in service-learning partnerships. Three focus groups (N = 19) were held with representatives from diverse nonprofit organizations recruited from a university-based center for community service learning. Desire for expanded organizational capacity emerged as the strongest motivator, although enjoyment of mentoring students and the ability to acq…
Effects of Homelessness and Child Maltreatment on the Likelihood of Engaging in Property and Violent Crime During Adulthood
The current study employs data from the U.S. National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (N = 10,818; 56% female; 21% African American) to test how experiencing homelessness through emerging adulthood and child maltreatment predict adult property crime and violent crime. Unlike many published studies on homelessness, we used propensity score matching to correct for selection bias between homeless and nonhomeless individuals. Logistic regress…
Economics Imperialism under the Impact of Psychology: The Case of Behavioral Development Economics
Economics imperialism is broadly explained as economics having an impact on other disciplines. But how should economics imperialism be understood when it is in some sense the product of other disciplines having an impact on economics? The paper examines psychology’s impact on economics in connection with the emergence of behavioral development economics, and then discusses the nature of behavioral development economics imperialism associated with…

Capabilities and Personal Identity: Using Sen to explain personal identity in Folbre's 'structures of constraint' analysis
Folbre's 'structures of constraint' analysis treats women as socially embedded in 'multiple, often contradictory positions, because they belong to multiple groups'. This paper addresses the problem of women's multiple collective identities by arguing that Sen's capability framework offers a means of explaining how women can maintain coherent personal identities. Using Sen's real opportunities sense of capabilities, the paper argues that women can…

The Capabilities Conception of the Individual 1
This paper advances a capabilities conception of the individual, and considers some of the problems involved in developing such a conception. It also makes claims about the nature of the capability space as a whole, frames personal development in terms of the idea of moving though the capability space, and argues that people are alike in being increasingly heterogeneous. A key problem for a capabilities conception of the individual is that some c…

Smith's Invisible Hand and Hegel's Cunning of Reason
The affinities of Smith′s invisible hand notion and Hegel′s cunning of reason are examined through a study of all the key locations in which the invisible hand and cunning of reason are introduced. Despite their differences in orientation and philosophy, both writers reach similar conclusions regarding the play of self‐interest and the emergence of the social good. Specifically, each requires a deus ex machina – Providence or Geist – to generate …

What If Sophistry Is Universal
Althusser's view of the place of ethics in Marx's thought
Karl Marx's social theory has often been thought to raise ethical questions at the outset. Yet many economists and social scientists believe social theory should be value-free and positive. Louis Althusser takes this view in arguing against the humanist interpretation of Marx. He advances a theory of reading for interpretation of Marx, and concludes that the “problematic” of Marx's later thought—as it arises from Marx's own distinctive philosophy…

Sraffa, interdependence and demand: The Gramscian influence
The influence of Sraffa' early commitments to Gramscian Marxism on his subsequent economic analysis have been little investigated by Sraffa scholars. The discussion here argues for a philosophical connection.
