  • From the Middle - Upper Pleistocene transition to Holocene-a sedimentary profile in the Parchliny area (central Poland) – a comprehensive record of palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic changes

    Open Access•Lucyna Wachecka-Kotkowska, Dariusz Wieczorek et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026

  • Mesolithic-Neolithic Multi-layer Wetland Complex Serteya II: Palaeoclimatic Changes and Hunter-gatherer Communities in the 8th—3rd Millennia BC

A N Mazurkevich, Andrey Mazurkevich et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2026

Changes in the ecosystem may be an important factor influencing the evolution of ancient communities. Wetland sites are among the most valuable “natural archives” for ancient history and environmental change reconstruction. Multidisciplinary research at the Serteya II site, located in the Dnieper-Dvina basin, allowed revealing the sequence of historical and natural events from 8,000 to 3,000 BC based on “natural archives”. The paleolandscape was …

  • Human and birds: Avifauna at hunter-gatherer sites of the 6th to 3rd millennia BC (Western Dvina Lakeland)

    Open Access•A N Mazurkevich, Andrey Mazurkevich et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2023

The paper presents the study of avifauna from the hunter-gatherer sites at the Dnieper-Dvina basin spanning time period from the 6th to 3rd millennia BC. A total of 669 bird bones were identified and attributed to 46 different bird taxa, representing resident and migrant birds. They belong to four habitat groups: waterfowl, forest, woodside and meadow-steppe. The dominance of waterfowl birds follows the common strategy of aquatic resources exploi…

  • Small peatland with a big story: 600-Year paleoecological and historical data from a kettle-hole peatland in Western Russia

    Open Access•Agnieszka Mroczkowska, Piotr Kittel et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Peatlands are important records of past environmental changes. Based on a multiproxy analysis, the main factors influencing the evolution of a peatland can be divided into autogenic and allogenic. Among the important allogenic factors, apart from climate change, are deforestation and drainage, which are directly associated with human impact. Numerous consequences arise from these processes, the most important of which are physical and chemical de…

  • On the border between land and water: The environmental conditions of the Neolithic occupation from 4.3 until 1.6 ka BC at Serteya, Western Russia

    Open Access•Piotr Kittel, A N Mazurkevich et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2020•Cited by: 9•References: 17

The paper presents the results of a palaeoecological study of Neolithic archaeological layers from a wetland, multilayer site, Serteya II (Western Russia). It contains, domestic structures, rich organic artefacts, skeletons, and ecofacts preserved within lacustrine deposits that are extremely important on a European scale. We employed a set of specialised palaeoecological analyses and accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dating to identify t…

  • The palaeoecological development of the Late Medieval moat - Multiproxy research at Rozprza, Central Poland

    Open Access•Monika Rzodkiewicz, J Sikora et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2018

  • Early Holocene hydrology and environments of the Ner River (Poland)

Open Access•Piotr Kittel, Mateusz Płóciennik et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

The Ner River valley (central Poland) underwent substantial transformation during the Weichselian–Holocene transition as a result of fluvial processes and climate changes, resulting in the establishment of its present shape in the Holocene. A multiproxy study based on organic deposits from a palaeochannel fill (Lutomiersk–Koziówki) shows that after the channel was cut off during the late glacial termination, it became a shallow oxbow, fed by loca…
