Community Lost? Changes and Stratification in Perceived Neighborhood Social Cohesion among Families with Children
Neighborhood social cohesion is strongly associated with health and well-being, especially among families with children. However, there is a widespread perception in the media, policy circles, and prominent research traditions that neighborhood social cohesion has decreased in recent decades for the United States as a whole and among certain subpopulations. Unfortunately, the empirical evidence for such trends is thin. In this study, we use data …
Associations between teacher expectations and racial disproportionality in discipline referrals
We explored the racial discipline gap and sought to understand the extent to which elementary school teachers' (N = 33; Grades K-6) expectations for their students' (N = 496) future outcomes predicted racial discipline disproportionality. We used multilevel models, and Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression with standardized errors corrected, to examine associations between teacher expectations of academic and behavioral student outcomes and pat…
Educational and Type of Day Differences in Mothers' Time Availability for Child Care and Housework
OBJECTIVE: The authors analyzed variation by education and type of day in the "time availability" association between U.S. mothers' paid work hours and housework and child care, types of work that vary by their urgency, affect, and symbolic meaning. BACKGROUND: Research shows a stronger negative association of women's work hours with housework than child care, and interprets this as evidence to show mothers prioritize child care over housework. T…

Racial Disparities in Lifer Parole Outcomes: The Hidden Role of Professional Evaluations
One in seven people in prison in the US is serving a life sentence, and most of these people will eventually be eligible for discretionary parole release. Yet parole hearings are notoriously understudied. With only a handful of exceptions, few researchers have considered the ways in which race shapes decision-makers’ perception of parole candidates. We use a data set created from over seven hundred California lifer parole hearing transcripts to e…
Access to Social Network Support and Material Hardship
Does access to social network support help protect households from material hardship? In this study, we analyze data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation ( N = 28,805) and find that access to assistance from family and friends is associated with a decrease in the likelihood that a household experiences bill-paying hardship, food hardship, or health care hardship. In addition, we examine the interaction between household income and …
Occupational mobility for whom: Education, cohorts, the life course and occupational gender composition, 1970–2010
Gender differences in the impact of job mobility on earnings: The role of occupational segregation
Postmarital Living Arrangements in Historically Patrilocal Settings: Integrating Household Fission and Migration Perspectives
This study integrates theory and research on household fission (or partition) and migration to better understand living arrangements following marriage, especially in historically patrilocal and primarily agricultural settings. Using panel data from the Chitwan Valley Family Study to analyze the sequential decision-making process that influences men’s living arrangements subsequent to first marriage, we demonstrate the importance of distinguishin…
Measuring Five Dimensions of Religiosity across Adolescence
This paper theorizes and tests a latent variable model of adolescent religiosity in which five dimensions of religiosity are interrelated: religious beliefs, religious exclusivity, external practice, private practice, and religious salience. Research often theorizes overlapping and independent influences of single items or dimensions of religiosity on outcomes such as adolescent sexual behavior, but rarely operationalizes the dimensions in a meas…
The Consequences of Job Displacement for Health: Moderating Influences of Economic Conditions and Educational Attainment
