  • The changing nature of Glasgow's ethnic‐minority community

    This paper draws on a research study carried out for Glasgow District Council and updates previous work in the city. It shows a rise in ethnic‐minority population to over 19,000, still concentrated in the inner city but with increasing desegregation into council housing and new private estates.     Ethnic minority housing in Glasgow is predominantly owner‐occupied. Knowledge of council housing is limited and the application rate is consequently low. The allocations policy is discriminatory. Ethnic minority council tenants are dissatisfied with their houses and subject to harassment. The housing orientations of Asian respondents to a city‐wide survey are discussed.     Definitions of racial harassment adopting symmetrical and asymmetrical perspectives are reviewed, and the term 'racist harassment' is proposed.
