Vacuous interlocutors as hieratic proxies in the sacrosphere of Andalusian flamenco saeta
Saeta (Spanish: ‘arrow’) is nowadays identified as a religious modality of flamenco singing, performed during Holy Week celebrations. The textual fabric of a saeta comprises both melody, manner of singing, and verbal texts, as well as the inherent spatiality of a communicative act. Due to the multifaceted nature of this cultural phenomenon, the semiotic perspective is optimal to capture “a psychosocial connection” through investigated signage. In…
Crowning, rotating, and emanating hierophanies with elevatio aspect in wayside shrines
My aim in this paper is to investigate the variants of directionality implied in visual hieratic texts as religious markers in the sacrosphere, which are substantially expressed in the form of a wayside shrine/cross. The methodological underpinnings for this project rely on the proposed semiotactics (cf. Haładewicz-Grzelak): the investigative perspective modeled after phonotactics – a branch of phonology investigating the restrictions on and the …
Sports utility semiotics
The article aims to illuminate the issue of symbolic potential in postmodern society through a semiotic study of car design. In Baudrillard’s terminology, we explore the experience and sociological and psychological materiality of objects that, being above objects’ perceptible materiality, constantly modify the integrity of technological systems (Baudrillard 2005 [1968]: 6). The target concepts are analyzed through Baudrillard’s lens of symbolic …
Saussure's équivalence sémiologique in the case study of Czech sonants
In "Réflections inédites de Saussure sur les phonèmes" (1973: 287-295), Roman Jakobson mentions an untitled manuscript, described as "étude phonetique." In it, Saussure provides an interesting equation: phonème = valeur sémiologique. The equation stresses the purely semiological aspect of the phoneme and will serve as a focal point for the analysis carried out in this paper. The discussion will also explore two other related concepts introduced i…
Story-ing memory in the Licheń Pilgrimage Centre (Poland)
This article examines the topic of ‘heritage’ in the context of the skyrocketing development of a Catholic pilgrimage centre in Licheń (Poland). Using photographic documentation of local memorabilia, gathered during joint fieldwork done on the premises of the centre in September 2010, we posit that Licheń is an instance of lieu de mémoire (cf. Nora, 1996), prepared for pilgrims/tourists as a pedestrian walk (cf. Plate, 2006; Urry, 2002). Along th…
The segmentation of phenomenological space in Licheń as an example of double binds
The Licheń pilgrimage center, managed by the Marian order, is a phenomenon in Poland beyond classification and a subject of hot controversy. Media attention has indicated various issues that remain unclear behind the construction and management of the center (see, e.g., Kwiatkowska-England 2007; Dzienisiewicz 2002). Studies by ethnographers show how its legend is being made ad-hoc, often with the help of local artisans (e.g., Marciniak 1999). The…
Boundary mechanisms in adverts from Silesian Catholic periodicals from the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries
The paper provides an empirical study of semiotic mechanisms of culture. We apply the methodology developed by the Tartu-Moscow School of Semiotics, building also on the criteria of boundary-work dynamics to examine a collected corpus of adverts appearing in Silesian Catholic periodicals (in German and in Polish) from the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. We discuss the cultural implications of the differences and similarities in …
The analysis of Licheń's Holy Icon as a case study in semiotic fortition
Through a team fieldwork study that entailed participant observation and creating a database of visual images (September 2010), this study seeks an understanding of semiotic fortition as a natural process. Natural semiotic processes are conceptualized here following the tenets of Natural Linguistics (e.g., Stampe 1979[1973]; Dziubalska-Kołaczyk 2002). Of particular relevance as a research category is the dyad of lenitions (the processes serving t…
Semiotic value in advertisements in Silesian Catholic periodicals from the second half of the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries
The paper studies semiotic values in advertisements appearing in German Catholic periodicals in Silesia in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The study is grounded in the Tartu School of Semiotics and shows shifts and hierarchies in the semiotic valuations of particular commodities. Collected advertisements were classified into four main groups: (1) books, (2) church art, (3) church and devotional accessories, (4) ev…
Dynamic modeling of visual texts
This paper is a study in cultural semiotics, aiming at a dynamic application of semiotic relations (cf., e.g., Neuman 2003; Danesi 2004; Bateson 1972; Kress and Van Leeuwen 1992; Deely 2009). The argument aims to introduce a heuristic modeling of social space. The sources for the analysis are the photos taken by the author in 2006–2009 in Poland, Italy, and Austria. Based on the underpinnings from contemporary linguistic models, cybernetics, and …
Cultural codes in the iconography of St Nicholas (Santa Claus)
This paper examines some aspects of the cultural codes implied in the iconography of St Nicholas (Santa Claus). The argument posits the iconography of St Nicholas as a vessel for capturing meanings and accumulating them in the construction of public culture. The discussion begins from the earliest developments of the Christian era and proceeds to contemporary depictions (imagology). The study is conducted on the basis of a representative selectio…
The linguistic market in Polish radio commercials
Cultural and sociolinguistic studies on the pragmatics of radio have so far neglected the impact of radio advertising. Radio commercials are perceived as a marginal and unimportant outlet of consumerist values and I submit that the misrecognition of their ontological status is the gist of their hidden impact. The purpose of this study is thus to uncover some aspects in which radiocracy (a term coined by John Hartley) interrelates with culture thr…
The mythopoeia in Stalinist propaganda of post-war Poland
This article analyzes the discourse of propaganda in the apogee of the Stalinist era in Poland (1949–1953) as creating a quasi-mythical reality (mythopoeia). The analysis draws on the structuralist conceptions of myth-making following the work of Lévi-Strauss and Roland Barthes expanded to the paradigm of social semiotics. The study demonstrates how the positioning of social actors creates cosmogonic relations between them. In this way, it subscr…
Visual syntax in the iconography of Saint Nicholas
This article analyzes the iconography of Saint Nicholas from the retrospective angle of the interrelation of constituent meanings. I propose that the persona of Saint Nicholas is a “complex symbol” consisting of a number of simple symbols (e.g., the crosier and miter in Western Christianity representations, the blessing in Orthodox icons, the bag in secular and hyper-secular renditions, etc.). These simple symbols entail implicational structuring…
An Epistemological Study of Chomsky's Transformational Grammar
The article traces interpretative mechanisms hidden in Chomsky's Transformational Model. The framework is that of epistemological criticism, investigating the intertwining of interpretation, context and intuition. My hypothesis is that the Transformational Model is an example of a quasi-axiomatic, intuition-based grammar. It is not a scientific model of Competence but a scientistic description of Performance (teleological corpora). The scientisti…
