  • A tragedy of errors? Institutional dynamics and land tenure in Finnmark, Norway

Open Access•Andrei Marin, Ivar Bjørklund•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2015

Reindeer herding in Finnmark has been widely perceived during the last few decades as a perfect example of the tragedy of the commons. The present article claims that this discourse relies on flawed assumption regarding land tenure. Our historical analysis of the term ‘common’ in relation to resources in Finnmark shows the term to reflect a misunderstanding of local categories, practices, and concerns related to pastures, territories, and natural…

  • Industrial impacts and Indigenous representation: Some fallacies in the Sámi quest for autonomy

    Open Access•Ivar Bjørklund•ARTICLE•Études/Inuit/Studies•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 7

While Indigenous communities in all circumpolar regions today face increasing pressure from mining companies, their influence in decision-making processes varies substantially. In Norway, the pasturelands of the reindeer-herding Sámi have huge mineral potential and new mining projects are in development. Such projects imply a domino effect, since they tend to generate infrastructures like roads, power lines, and so on. Norway enjoys a high profil…

  • Domestication, Reindeer Husbandry and the Development of Sámi Pastoralism

    Ivar Bjørklund•ARTICLE•Acta Borealia•2013•Cited by: 34•References: 4

A recurrent topic in ethnographic, historical and archaeological research has been the origins of Sámi reindeer pastoralism. The article discusses how prevailing theories have been influenced by general conceptual schemes, apriori constructed models and an extensive use of taxonomies. The debate has centered around how and when domestication took place, presupposing a paradigmatic change from hunting to pastoralism. However, there has probably ne…

  • Negotiating with the Public - Ethnographic Museums and Ethnopolitics

Open Access•Harald Eidheim, Ivar Bjørklund et al.•ARTICLE•Museum and Society•2012

Indigenous peoples, like the Sami of Fenno-Scandinavia, continue to be the object of museum display in ethnographic museums. Most of these exhibits focus predominantly on culture history via objects that reveal the quality and richness of indigenous cultures, with less emphasis on the political struggles that indigenous peoples are involved in. This paper is a reflection on the experiences in making a museum representation of a modern indigenous …

  • The anatomy of a millennarian movement: Some organizational conditions for the Sami revolt in Guovdageaidnu in 1852

    Ivar Bjørklund•ARTICLE•Acta Borealia•1992•Cited by: 2

  • Sámi Reindeer Pastoralism as an Indigenous Resource Management System in Northern Norway: A Contribution to the Common Property Debate

    Open Access•Ivar Bjørklund•ARTICLE•Development and Change•1990•Cited by: 12•References: 10

Pastoralism is defined here as a system in which humanity mediates the relation between land and animals. The paper argues that the conventional idea of pastoralism as a pure relation between animals and land obscures indigenous resource management systems such as that of the Sámi, with its seasonal variations in both labour and pasture. This management is exercised through flexible social groupings which mediate the relation between the size of …

  • Fields of interaction and implication systems: Læstadianism and social change in the north of Norway

    Ivar Bjørklund•ARTICLE•Ethnos•1988•References: 3

Lætadianism-the religious revival as it appeared in Northern Norway in the second half of the last century-is analyzed as a form of symbolic opposition (Schwimmer 1972) from the Sámi and the Kvens against the Norwegian policy of cultural and economic integration. The expansion of Norwegian administration and economy from the middle of the 19th century, established new status-sets and fields of interaction within agriculture, school-system and hea…
