  • On the institutional (dis)organisation of semiotics as a discipline

    Open Access•Eduardo Chávez Herrera•ARTICLE•Estudos Semióticos•2023

Semiotics, as the field dealing with the production of meaning-making mechanisms, was supposed to be a holistic project. Semioticians in the 20th century were concerned about providing semiotics an epistemological identity. For instance, semiotics was aimed at following a meta-role (Greimas, 1976) as ‘a metadiscipline of all academic disciplines’ (Posner, 2003, p. 2366). In fact, Sebeok (1976) deemed semiotics as a ‘doctrine of signs’, refusing t…

  • Semioticians narrating a field

    Open Access•Eduardo Chávez Herrera•ARTICLE•Signata•2022

The paper discusses the results of a larger study carried out with 40 semiotics scholars in 12 countries (Germany, France, United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Estonia, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Luxembourg, the United States and Mexico) in 3 languages (French, English and Spanish) conducted in the framework of the ERC DISCONEX project. In this research, we focused on the under-researched area of semiotics scholars’ identity construction, and examined…

  • Narcoculture? Narco-trafficking as a semiosphere of anticulture

    Open Access•Julieta Haidar, Eduardo Chávez Herrera•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2018•References: 6

In this paper we approach a current issue related to the so-called concept of narcoculture . Several works in Latin America and the United States have addressed this matter and not only accept the term narcoculture, but also stress both the symbolic and aesthetic perspectives. In order to rethink the concept of narcoculture from different angles, we appeal to Juri Lotman and Boris Uspensky’s proposals regarding the concepts of culture, non-cultur…
