Elephants as Prospecting Infrastructure
In his study of northern Myanmar, Jacob Shell shows how elephants play a key role in amber prospecting and extraction, and raises questions about the future of elephant-reliant transport in the face of infrastructural modernity
Elephants as Prospecting Infrastructure
Rights in Transit: Public Transportation and the Right to the City in California's East Bay
In recent years, a number of researchers in geography and in urban studies have taken to the idea of the "right to the city." These scholars have drawn on the idea to frame debates on topics as wide ranging as urban social movements, the regulation of urban public space, to the relationship between cities and citizenship. The Enigma of the Asian Elephant: Sovereignty, Reproductive Nature, and the Limits of Empire
This article examines the dependency of British teak logging and shipbuilding on elephant-based labor in Burma (Myanmar) and India during the nineteenth century. Asian elephants were essential as a means of commodity extraction, offering irreplaceable forms of mobility across difficult forest terrain. At the same time, from the standpoint of colonial control, a frustrating feature of the elephants was their unwillingness to mate when in captivity…
Elephant convoys beyond the state: Animal-based transport as subversive logistics
This article explores and analyzes a form of subversive logistics: the use of trained Asian elephants in the mobilization of cargo and people. This unusual means of conveyance, whose zone of persistence is mainly in the forested uplands of Burma (Myanmar) and parts of northeast India, most comes into its own during logistical operations which occur without the use of fixed-route roads. Empirically, the article presents fieldwork conducted in Burm…
Verkehr , or Subversive Mobility: Recovering Radical Transportation Geographies from Language
This article theorizes subversive mobility by looking at the layers of meaning connoted by a set of etymologically complex words in several languages. I examine at how the semantics of words like Verkehr (German), “filibuster” (English), Yangjingbang (Shanghainese vernacular), and others, convey human experiences of physical mobility and political subversion as interconnected. This discussion is both philological and historical-geographic in orie…
