  • Pregnant Women's and Community Health Workers' Perceptions of Root Causes of Malnutrition Among Infants and Young Children in the Slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh

Sophie Goudet, Sophie M Goudet et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2011•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 23

Research in Bangladesh shows that malnutrition among infants and young children is most severe in urban slums. We examined the root causes of malnutrition as perceived by pregnant women and community health workers. We conducted 10 focus group discussions in the slums of Dhaka in 2008 and 2009. Participants accurately perceived inappropriate care, inappropriate environment, inappropriate food, and flooding to be major causes. Recurrent flooding h…

  • Mother's body mass index as a predictor of infant's nutritional status in the post-emergency phase of a flood

Open Access•Sophie Goudet, Paula Griffths et al.•ARTICLE•Disasters•2011•Referencias: 43

Maternal nutritional status is a determinant of child health. This paper studies the association between a mother's body mass index (BMI) and her infant's nutritional status over a one year time frame after the 1998 flood crisis in Bangladesh. The paper uses secondary analysis of data collected from 757 households in seven rural areas of Bangladesh affected by the 1998 flood using multiple-stage probability sampling techniques (n = 143). Logistic…

  • Impact of flooding on feeding practices of infants and young children in Dhaka, Bangladesh Slums

Open Access•Sophie Goudet, Sophie M Goudet et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2010

Previous research has shown that urban slums are hostile environments for the growth of infants and young children (IYC). Flooding is a hazard commonly found in Dhaka slums (Bangladesh) which negatively impacts IYC's nutritional and health status. This paper aims 1) to identify the impact of flooding on IYC's feeding practices, and 2) to explore the coping strategies developed by caregivers. Qualitative data (participant observation and semi-stru…

  • Seasonal pattern in the rate of growth in height of children living in Guatemala

    Open Access•B Bogin, Barry A Bogin•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1978•Citada por: 18•Referencias: 10

Monthly increments of height for a sample of 164 Guatemala City school children are analyzed for the presence of a seasonal pattern in rates of growth. It is found that pre and post adolescent children follow a seasonal pattern of growth but adolescent children do not. It is suggested that the results are due to an effect of seasonal changes in ultraviolet light availability and the synthesis of vitamin D 3 as mediated by the level of maturation …
