  • Experimental Tests of Risk Ladders in the Elicitation of Perceived Likelihood

    Open Access•Alexander Persoskie, Julie S Downs•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2015•References: 3

Risk ladders have the potential to improve numeric judgments of low‐likelihood events by providing information about the likelihoods of comparison risks, thereby letting respondents make risk estimates “in context.” However, to date this tool has been studied systematically only in communication of risk, not in elicitation of perceived likelihoods. In three studies, we evaluated the benefits of risk ladders on the consistency, validity, and mean‐…

Objectives. We examined the effect on food purchases of adding recommended calorie intake per day or per meal to the mandated calorie information posted on chain restaurant menus. Methods. Before and after New York City implemented calorie posting on chain restaurant menus in 2008, we provided daily, per-meal, or no calorie recommendations to randomized subsets of adult lunchtime customers (n = 1121) entering 2 McDonald’s restaurants, in Manhatta…

  • Mixed Drinks and Mixed Messages

    Open Access•Jennifer A Livingston, Laina Bay-Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•2012•Cited by: 10•References: 15

Experimentation with alcohol and sexuality is a normative aspect of adolescent development. It is unclear how adolescent females interpret th…

  • Strategies for Promoting Healthier Food Choices

    Julie S Downs, G Loewenstein et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2009

Between 1960 and 2004, the proportion of Americans meeting standard criteria for obesity increased from 13 percent to 31 percent (Katherine M. Flegal et al. 2002), and it has been proposed that, if this trend is not reversed, obesity may soon overtake smoking as the leading preventable cause of death (Ali H. Mokdad et al. 2004). Consequently, obesity is now one of the major causes of rising health care costs (Eric A. Finkelstein, Christopher J. R…

  • Minimal conditions for the creation of a unit relationship

    Open Access•Dale T Miller, Julie S Downs et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1998•References: 6

We hypothesize that sharing a birthday is sufficient to create a unit relationship. Two studies demonstrated that individuals cooperated more in a prisoners dilemma game when their (fictitious) opponent shared their birthday. They also reacted more negatively to betrayal and were less sensitive to relative gains for self versus other. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
