  • Opera trainees’ cognitive functioning is associated with physiological stress during performance

Open Access•Negin Motamed Yeganeh, Taylor Mckee et al.•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2024

In an opera performance, singers must perform difficult musical repertoire at a high level while dealing with the stress of standing before a large audience. Previous literature suggests that individuals with better cognitive functions experience less stress. During a music performance such functions, especially attention, memory, and executive function, are in high demand, suggesting that cognitive functions may play a role in music performance.…

  • The phantoms of the opera—Stress offstage and stress onstage

Open Access•Anja-Xiaoxing Cui, Negin Motamed Yeganeh et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Music•2022

During opera performance singers deliver vocally demanding roles, follow a conductor, portray emotions of a musical work, act, dance, and engage with costumes, sets and props before an audience. Hence, opera performance is a stressful experience. This study examined different types of stress experiences by measuring the trajectories of 10 opera trainees’ heart rate variability (HRV) during two performances, covering onstage and offstage periods. …

  • Methodology and Indigenous memory: Using photographs to anchor critical reflections on Indian residential school experiences

Alexandra Giancarlo, Janice Forsyth et al.•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2021

In this paper, we discuss the theoretical foundations, methodology, and method for a now-underway historical Indigenous sport photo elicitation project. In our photo elicitation sessions with former members of the Sioux Lookout Black Hawks, an Indian residential school (boarding school) hockey team that famously toured Ontario, Canada in 1951, we use photo elicitation to spark memories and provide a sense of immediacy for participants, most of wh…

  • Data, Development Discourse, and Decolonization: Developing an Indigenous Evaluation Model for Indigenous Youth Hockey in Canada

Janice Forsyth, Taylor Mckee et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian ethnic studies•2021•Cited by: 2

Quantitative methodologies play a critical, though often unacknowledged, role in establishing and maintaining unequal power relations in Canada. This power imbalance is readily apparent in Indigenous sport-for-development initiatives, which are permeated by deficit perspectives that produce and accentuate understandings about Indigenous dysfunction. As a result, these initiatives, no matter how positively framed or how much progress is noted, mai…

  • Witnessing Painful Pasts: Understanding Images of Sports at Canadian Indian Residential Schools

Taylor Mckee, Janice Forsyth•ARTICLE•Journal of Sport History•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Images are powerful tools for shaping perceptions of the past. In the context of sport at Canadian Indian residential schools, photographic images were consciously constructed and carefully selected and have been subsequently recirculated by contemporary media. Images of smiling, happy children at play at Canadian Indian residential schools have been used to lend credence to notions of sport as an unquestionable force for good without considering…
