  • The Power of Combining MA-XRF, Infrared Reflectography and Digital Microscopy to Unveil the Production of the 16th Century Illuminated Charter of Évora: What May Be Hidden under a Painted Surface

    Open Access•Catarina Miguel, Silvia Bottura‐Scardina et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 2

In recent decades, many works have been devoted to the study of materials and painting techniques used to produce illuminated manuscripts. If the analyses were once largely invasive, the approach has become increasingly more in situ and non-invasive over the years. This work presents the results of the analysis of the Portuguese Charter of Évora, an illuminated manuscript that dates back to 1501, combining an elemental mapping technique (MA-XRF) …

  • The Matter from Which an Orange Colour Is Made: On the Arsenic Pigment Used in a Portuguese Mannerist Painting

    Open Access•Anne J Cruz, Helena P Melo et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2022•References: 5

The painting The Descent from the Cross, painted in 1620 by Pedro Nunes (1586–1637), presents two large figures with orange-coloured fabrics with conservation problems. Through the analysis of two samples with several analytical techniques, especially scanning electron microscopy combined with X-ray spectroscopy and Raman microscopy, it was possible to conclude that the orange colour is due to a complex artificial pigment made of amorphous arseni…

  • Narrating codex history: The case study of a psalter-hymnal from Alcobaça Monastery, Portugal

Open Access•Conceição Casanova, Samuel Arrojado Rodrigues et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 6

To answer provenance questions and trace the manuscript’s history, a multidisciplinary team studied the entire procedure of making the codex, which went from in-depth textual, liturgical, and codicologic…

  • Study of a Late Bronze Age Casting Mould and Its Black Residue by 3D Imaging, pXRF, SEM-EDS, Micro-FTIR and Micro-Raman

    Open Access•Elin Figueiredo, C Bottaini et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 6

In the present work, a fragment of a stone mould recently found in Galicia (NW Spain) was studied by multiple analytical techniques approach involving 3D optical imaging reconstruction to obtain data about the shape of the mould, typology of artefact produced, and distribution of a black residue at the surface of the mould and pXRF, SEM-EDS, micro-FTIR, and micro-Raman to investigate the nature of the black residue. The study shows that the mould…
