  • Goals for teaching the history of linguistics

    Open Access•Sam Rosenthall•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2024

A history of linguistics course is as an opportunity to revisit some important linguistic concepts students have learned. Students are usually exposed to the larger goals of linguistic theory, but it is not the primary focus in syntax and phonology courses, for example. By examining the historical development of these concepts, e.g., phonemes, transformations, universal grammar, linguistic relativity etc., a history of linguistics course can be u…

  • Glide Distribution in Classical Arabic Verb Stems

    Sam Rosenthall•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The seemingly idiosyncratic distribution of glides in the weak verb stems of Classical Arabic is given a coherent analysis as the consequence of constraint interaction, as defined by Optimality Theory. At the core of the analysis are two constraint rankings that determine the vowels of the verb stem. One ranking, which ensures harmonic parsing of a low vowel over high vowels, is based on input/output faithfulness; the other ranking, which ensures…

  • Phonetics and phonology of main stress in Italian

    Open Access•Mariapaola D'Imperio, Mariapaola D’Imperio et al.•ARTICLE•Phonology•1999

Vowel duration is not contrastive in standard and regional varieties of Italian. However, vowels in stressed open syllables are longer than unstressed vowels or vowels in closed syllables. The increased duration is not equal in all positions. Most notably, the increased duration of a stressed open penultimate syllable is much greater than the duration of a stressed open antepenultimate syllable or a stressed final syllable, which has no noticeabl…
