Heritage languages and language as heritage
This article draws on recent discourses surrounding intangible cultural heritage (ICH) and its relationship to language preservation, practice, and revitalisation to propose that language be considered a form and practice of heritage in and of itself, not merely a vehicle for the conveyance of ICH. As such, language can serve as a bridge between the often-parallel tracks of tangible and intangible heritage, helping arrive at an understanding of h…
Living with Earthquakes, Past and Future
Debt and Entanglements Between the Wars
The seven chapters in this volume tell stories about correlated macroeconomic and political events that occurred in six countries and four Dominions of the British Commonwealth between 1914 and 1940. By a story, I mean a collection of observations ordered in time together with causal interpretations that come from projecting the observations onto a theory. Correlations among our stories arise partly from the international aspects of the events be…
Dux
The title dux (plural duces ) was synonymous with military command throughout much of the Roman period, though its usage changed considerably over time. The trade deficits of the not-north of Europe rapidly reversed. This reversal came hand in hand with drastic increases in unemployment. The north's pre-crisis trade surpluses continued into the post-crisis era with Europe as a whole replacing China as the largest surplus bloc in the world. Unemployment i…
Chiseling away at a concrete legacy
Albania spent much of the 20th century under one of Europe’s most ideologically repressive regimes. In order to justify and ostensibly protect this system, the Albanian Communist regime (1944–1992) constructed a massive array of defensive works, which formed a major piece of the Hoxhaist (after Enver Hoxha) aesthetic. Twenty years after the fall of Communism, Albanians have gained the freedom to travel abroad, but have largely avoided addressing …

The Internal Protection Alternative Under European Union Law
The European Union is currently in the process of revising the central directives that make up European Union refugee law, a project that will touch on almost every aspect of seeking asylum in Europe. This article will focus on the implementation of one doctrine, the internal protection or internal flight alternative, under the recently recast Qualification Directive. The article will first examine the application of the internal protection alter…
