Searching for socio-ecological approaches to increase Balanites trees through local small-scale conservation in the conservancies adjoining the Maasai Mara, Kenya
On the edges of the Maasai Mara in western Kenya there are 15 conservancies, where herds of wildlife, cattle, sheep, goats, and predators are found with Balanites aegyptiaca, an iconic and much-photographed tree known by many names, such as desert date, or more simply, Balanites. Most individuals are 80–90 years old, yet the tree has a life-expectancy of about 120 years. Lack of young trees is due to grazing and browsing impacts from sheep and go…

Wadis as dryland river parks
Dryland rivers (wadis in Arabic) are characterised by high levels of flow unpredictability due to their severe dry-wet hydrological regimes. In the Arabian Peninsula, recent attention has focused on revitalising the socio-ecological values of wadis by rejuvenating them as linear public parks. In this paper, we review the key hydro-ecological characteristics of wadis and examine a range of design responses to address their dynamics in urban areas.…
Landscape practice in the Middle East between local and global aspirations
In the Middle East today, there are strong tensions between global and local aspirations in landscape architectural projects. Modernism, introduced to major cities in the Middle East, led to design approaches that are detached from local context, some adopting a tabula rasa attitude to site or inspired by Western models with little adaptation. Ambitious designers who seek to celebrate local values through context-based designs face dilemmas betwe…

When I accepted a job in Melbourne nine years ago, a friend who is a Noongar1 woman said to me: ‘You can't go to Melbourne! You're a West Coast Dune Woman!’ I knew that no truer words had ever been

Small Decisions in Suburban Open Spaces
What are some of the 'small decisions' in the life of new suburbs and how can small decisions engage with up-to-date knowledge to obtain the best ecological outcomes? Topography and soils, plant species and species selection, safety, and light, were taken as cases of small decisions in suburban development and ecological knowledge related to them is discussed. For each example, the sites of decision-making and knowledge were mapped in the context…
