  • A 2000-year history of disturbance and recovery at a sacred site in Peru’s northeastern cloud forest

    Open Access•Frazer Matthews‐Bird, Frazer Matthews-Bird et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 14

The last 2000 years in the tropical Andes was both a time of major pre-Hispanic and Hispanic period cultural developments, and increased climate variability. From c. AD 1000, Andean societies underwent significant transformation and many sites previously integrated under imperial Wari hegemony were abandoned. It has been argued that this sociopolitical reorganization was, in part, a response to the heightened climate variability of the late-Holoc…

  • Exploring imperial expansion using an isotopic analysis of paleodietary and paleomobility indicators in Chachapoyas, Peru

Open Access•J Marla Toyne, Wesley Church et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2016•Cited by: 15•References: 34

Objectives Inca imperial strategies of political and territorial expansion varied across conquered regions depending on local ecology and cultural resistance, and Chachapoya peoples in Peru's forested northeastern Andes were renowned for their rebellions against the invaders. The cliff tombs of Los Pinchudos (AD 1470-1535) present opportunities to use stable isotopes to: (1) explore dietary and mobility patterns from a mortuary community interred…

  • Climate change and the agricultural history of a mid-elevation Andean montane forest

    Open Access•Mark B Bush, Nicole A Sublette Mosblech et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 16

The steep, wet, forested, slopes of the mid-elevation Andes have often been dismissed as inimical to human occupation. A lack of ancient lakes in these habitats has limited the availability of paleoecologists to contribute to this discussion. Here, we present fossil pollen and charcoal data from Lake Pomacochas in northern Peru, which is a 70-m-deep lake lying at 2100 m a.s.l. We present a c. 3500-year history of both significant climate change a…

The current study examined how self-reported racial/ethnic identification of adolescents living in poverty may be related to significant societal events and seminal public figures. Data from a multiple cohort longitudinal study, conducted in Mobile, Alabama between 1998 and 2011, were used to examine the impact of Barack Obama's nomination and presidency on racial/ethnic identification. The results show that significantly more adolescents changed…
