  • Dendrochronology and Late Holocene History of Bering Piedmont Glacier, Alaska

    Open Access•Gregory C Wiles, Austin Post et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1999

Fluctuations of the piedmont lobe of Bering Glacier and its sublobe Steller Glacier over the past two millennia are reconstructed using 34 radiocarbon dates and tree-ring data from 16 sites across the glaciers' forelands. The general sequence of glacial activity is consistent with well-dated fluctuations of tidewater and land-terminating glaciers elsewhere along the Gulf of Alaska. Extensive forested areas along 25 km of the Bering ice margin wer…

  • Correlation of Late Pleistocene Glaciolacustrine and Marine Deposits by Means of Geomagnetic Secular Variation, with Examples from Northern New York and Southern Ontario

    Open Access•Donald L Pair, Ernest H Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

The geomagnetic secular variation record retained by glaciolacustrine and marine sediments at nine sites in northern New York and southern Ontario provides a means for stratigraphic correlation of glacial deposits for the time period between about 12,600 to 9900 14 C yr B.P. Measurement of the depositional remanent magnetism of sediments deposited in Glacial Lake Iroquois and the Champlain Sea has produced a geomagnetic secular variation curve th…

  • Stratigraphic Evidence of a Pre-Wisconsinan Interglaciation in the Adirondack Mountains, New York

    Open Access•Ernest H Muller, Les Sirkin et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1993

Multiple tills separated by interbedded lake sediments were temporarily exposed during open-pit mining at Sanford Hill, near Newcomb, in the central Adirondack Mountains of northeastern New York. Radiocarbon ages of wood fragments from brown clay between two tills at that site indicate an age older than 55,000 yr B.P. A pollen profile in the brown pond clay (Tahawus clay) records a transition from initial domination by pine, spruce, and birch to …
