  • Pediment Land Forms in Little Namaqualand, South Africa

    W V Lewis, J A Mabbutt•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1955•Citada por: 2

This account of erosional piedmont surfaces, or pediments, in part of Little Namaqualand, South Africa, is based on field trips in 1949 and 1950 aided by grants from the University of Cape Town Staff Research Fund. Little has hitherto been written of this region, but its wealth of land forms and the useful supporting evidence of air photographs render it a profitable field of study. The physical sub-regions of Little Namaqualand are shown below. …

  • Miniature Spits and Embankments on a Lake-Shore, Iceland

    W V Lewis•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1943•Citada por: 1

A SERIES of miniature spits and embankments examined during a Cam? bridge expedition to Iceland in 1937 si ulated to a high degree their greater counterparts round the British coasts. It seems therefore that scale reductions of 10 or 100 to 1 do not materially affect the mechanism of spitbuilding. The lake occupied a mountain-girt hollow in the eastern foothills of Snaefell, East Iceland. It is shown in Fig. 1, taken from a plane-table survey mad…

  • Snow-Patch Erosion in Iceland

    W V Lewis•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1939•Citada por: 5

SNOW-PATCH erosion seems to be very important under peri-glacial conditions, and yet, as Bow an J has noted, there has been little mention of it. The subject was dealt with briefly after the Cambridge Iceland Expedi? tion, 1932,2 and in order to amplify the field-work carried out on that occasion a second visit was arranged for the summer of 1937. The site chosen was Snaefell, a Late Glacial volcano 3 with subsidiary cones, a few miles distant fr…

  • Nivation, River Grading, and Shoreline Development in South-East Iceland

    W V Lewis•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1936•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

THE Cambridge Iceland Expedition 1932 (I) enabled the writer to examine both the coastal and inland topography of South-East Iceland. The problems arising out of this visit which are to be discussed in this paper comprise three independent aspects of geomorphology, but they are here grouped together because the observations were made in the same region. Incipient Corries.-The mountains of South-East Iceland present a wealth of features which seem…
