  • Local Factors in Changing Land-Tenure Patterns

    An examination of changing patterns of land tenure in a four- section area of Lake Prairie Township, south-central Iowa, reveals that land prices followed similar trends at all scales and were largely controlled by macroscale forces. Discontinuity existed between regional and local trends in farm-tenure structure. Microscale phenomena like age structure, ethnicity, and local values were the important determinants of landownership change at the lo…

  • Houma Blowguns and Baskets in the Mississippi River Delta

    The Houma moved into the coastal marshes of the Mississippi River delta around 1800, where they acquired baskets and blowguns characteristic of Middle and South America. Their oral history provides evidence of relocation diffusion and contacts with distant areas of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. The delta's history also gives answers to how the tribe acquired these culture elements. This area was the focal point of several colonial powers.…
