  • At Dalits’ Feet

    Open Access•Anna Laine•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology Review•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Dalits’ bodies are archives of structural violence and discrimination based on caste. Through a process‐based notion of the archive, and close attention to Dalit counterforces, the current artistic–anthropological project addresses potentials for increased epistemic and social justice. This article reflects upon collaborative photographic inquiries of casteism during fieldwork within Tamil communities, analyzed through the concept “body as archiv…

  • Locating art practice in the British Tamil Diaspora

    Anna Laine•ARTICLE•World Art•2015•References: 19

This article locates the position of art practice within the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora in the UK. It focuses on three artists who use their art making to investigate experiences of migration and multiple belonging, and shows how absence of institutional support have constituted a marginalisation of their work. The artists' preference for visual art is at odds with the Tamil nationalist construction of an identity rooted in ancient poetry and dram…

  • Kolam patterns as materialisation and embodiment of rhythms

    Anna Laine•ARTICLE•Anthrovision•2013

  • Intervention or inspiration

    Open Access•Anna Laine•ARTICLE•Anthropology Today•2012•Cited by: 5•References: 8

This article explores a classic dilemma concerning the extent to which anthropologist fieldworkers may influence their fieldwork hosts. This dilemma arose in the course of the author's research on kolam drawing practices among diaspora Tamils in the UK. Kolam constitute a popular visual practice among Tamils in India and Sri Lanka, but less so in the diaspora. However, the researcher's interest in kolam practice began to awaken an interest on the…

  • Complementarity between Art and Anthropology

    Open Access•Anna Laine•ARTICLE•Suomen Antropologi Journal of the…•2009

As their first daily task, women in South India draw geometrical images, kolams, in front of their homes to greet the deities. These images engender and reinforce moods in the community, they construct feminine gender and they define the landscape as social. The paper describes how the employment of an artistic practice-photography-can affect the understanding of the kolam, an artistic practice in itself. Photography has a key role in that it has…
