  • Claiming presentism: Navigating vicious and virtuous forms of present-centered history

    Open Access•Juhan Hellerma•ARTICLE•Rethinking History•2026

This article examines historians’ multifaceted engagement with the concept of presentism. Traditionally associated with distortive historical practice, presentism has, in recent decades, been increasingly subjected to a more ambivalent discourse – one attentive not only to its shortcomings and fallacies but also to its merits and productive potential. The article argues that fully accommodating this polyvalent discourse requires framing presentis…

  • Making the Past Speak: Acceleration, Resonance, and Presence 1

    Open Access•Juhan Hellerma•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2024

This review essay offers an extended analysis of Hartmut Rosa's Resonance: A Sociology of Our Relationship to the World . By proposing a critical theory for our present times, the book dissects modes of being related to the world and how these relations are conditioned by the dynamic of escalation that is inscribed into modern social formations. Rosa argues that the wide‐ranging compulsion to grow, accelerate, and innovate produces a distorted an…

  • Kuidas ennastnäitav nähtavale tuua? Husserl ja Heidegger fenomenoloogia alustest / How to Bring the Self-showing to Light? Husserl and Heidegger on the Foundations of Phenomenology

Open Access•Juhan Hellerma, Karin Kustassoo•ARTICLE•Methis Studia humaniora Estonica•2024

Käesoleva artikli eesmärk on välja joonistada, kuidas need kaks mõtlejat mõtestavad fenomenoloogiat, küsides, mida kujutab nende käsitluses e…

  • Negotiating presentism: Toward a renewed understanding of historical change

    Juhan Hellerma•ARTICLE•Rethinking History•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 9

The article gives a critical examination considering the descriptive potential, explanatory limitations, and recent productive problematization of presentism. For several decades, notions of presentist temporality have occupied the forefront of debates about the nature of historical time, challenging the modern dynamic future-oriented temporal imaginary and theorizing the reign of an overwhelming present that assimilates the past and the future w…

  • History on the Move: Reimagining Historical Change and the (Im)possibility of Utopia in the 21st Century

Juhan Hellerma•ARTICLE•Journal of the Philosophy of…•2020•Cited by: 2

In his meticulously researched and conceptually innovative book, Zoltán Boldizsár Simon aims to capture the historical sensibility emergent during the postwar period broadly conceived, spanning from the 1940s to our present moment. Attending particularly to the debates concerning ecological and technological outlooks, Simon theorizes that our historical horizon is increasingly shaped by the expectations of an unprecedented event that challenges t…

  • Koselleck on Modernity, Historik, and Layers of Time

    Open Access•Juhan Hellerma•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2020•Cited by: 2

In the scholarly reception of his work, Reinhart Koselleck's notion of modernity and his theory of multiple times have been cast as essentially at odds with each other. This article argues that although these positions are valid, Koselleck's writings can also accommodate an interpretation according to which the theory of multiple temporalities, or "layers of time," provides theoretical ground for the modern understanding of time and history. Elab…
