  • The Meaning of Evolution and the Evolution of Meaning

Jaap Den Hollander•ARTICLE•Journal of the Philosophy of…•2014•References: 3

A major lesson to be learned from narrativist philosophy of history since Danto is that history and science differ in the organization and presentation of knowledge rather than in their subject-matter. This insight is most often seen as a decisive argument in favour of the ‘literary’ or ‘cultural’ character of history. However, if their subject-matter does not create an insurmountable barrier between history and science, the insight leaves room, …

  • Contemporary History and the Art of Self-distancing

    Open Access•Jaap Den Hollander•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2011•Cited by: 1

The metaphor of historical distance often appears in discussions about the study of contemporary history. It suggests that we cannot see the past in perspective if we are too near to it. • Introduction: The Metaphor of Historical Distance

Open Access•Jaap Den Hollander, Hugh Paul et al.•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2011•Cited by: 3

What does "historical distance" mean? Starting with Johan Huizinga, the famous Dutch historian who refused to lecture on contemporary history, this introductory article argues that "historical distance" is a metaphor used in a variety of intellectual contexts. Accordingly, the metaphor has ontological, epistemological, moral, aesthetic, as well as methodological connotations. This implies that historical distance cannot be reduced to a single "pr…

  • Beyond Historicism: From Leibniz to Luhmann

Jaap Den Hollander•ARTICLE•Journal of the Philosophy of…•2010•Cited by: 2

The phrase 'beyond historicism' is usually associated with Bielefeld historians like Hans Ulrich Wehler and Jürgen Kocka, who attempted to turn the study of history into a social science, but a better candidate would be the sociologist Niklas Luhmann, who happened to teach as well in Bielefeld during the 1970's and 1980's. Luhmann had little affinity with the project of his colleagues from the history department. He took the opposite view that th…
