Not All Edible Nuts Are Eaten: Evidence for Continued Aboriginal Cultural Use and Dispersal of Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii) in Southern But Not in Northern Queensland
Globally, there is increasing evidence that Indigenous peoples have manipulated plant and animal populations over millennia. The Bunya Pine ( Araucaria bidwillii Hook.) is a coniferous tree native to subtropical and tropical eastern Australia, which produces 30-100 large, edible seeds within a large cone weighing 5-10 kgs. Endemic Bunya populations occur as two disjunct populations: one in south-eastern Queensland/north-east New South Wales and t…
Frame alignment processes for locally useful agricultural soil research and extension: The role of farm advisors
Farm advisors are recognised as playing an increasingly central role in facilitating interactions between scientists and farmers to improve local implementation of sustainable soil management practices and agricultural innovations more broadly. However, there has been limited scrutiny of what farm advisors do when faced with conflicting interpretations among actors over techniques or approaches for facilitating agricultural innovation. This artic…
Regional Innovation Systems, Clusters, and the Knowledge Economy
This paper presents a systematic account of the idea and content of regional innovation systems following discoveries made by regional scientists, economic geographers and innovation analysts. It considers the conditions and criteria for empirical recognition and judgement as to whether scientifically analysed, concrete cases of innovation activity warrant the designation of regional innovation system. The paper concludes by claiming that the sou…
Fire ecology and Aboriginal land management in central Arnhem Land, northern Australia: A tradition of ecosystem management
Aim To compare fire behaviour and fire management practice at a site managed continuously by traditional Aboriginal owners with other sites in tropical northern Australia, including the nearby Kakadu National Park, and relate those observations to indicators of landscape condition. Location Dukaladjarranj, a clan estate in north‐central Arnhem Land, in the seasonal tropics of northern Australia. The site abuts a vast sandstone plateau that is an …
The Network Paradigm: New Departures in Corporate and Regional Development
Networking is a much-discussed organisational practice. The authors analyse the nature and extent of networking activity within and between firms, making the criticism that present organisational theory pays insufficient attention to network relations between firms and public or quasi-public intermediary agencies. This is an especially important phenomenon in small and medium-sized firms. A critical depiction of networking at the interregional an…

Research Policy and Review 19. Britain's New Spatial Paradigm: Technology, Locality and Society in Transition
‘Postmodernisation’ is introduced as a unifying concept for the set of processes which characterise the development of the space economy in the 1980s. The concept consists in effects which include: an increase in the unevenness of developmental potential between ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ British regions, growing polarisation in income and unemployment indices over space, a shift towards economies of scope by producers, a growing dynamism in localities …
