  • Cross-cultural social contexts

Feng-Kuang Chiang, Dennis Brooks et al.•ARTICLE•Interactive Learning Environments•2023

Active learning classrooms (ALCs) have been demonstrated to have significant and positive impacts on student learning experiences, student learning outcomes, and instructor and student behavior compared to traditional classrooms. The social context of a classroom – levels of student–student and student–instructor interaction – has been demonstrated to partially explain the effects ALCs have on students and instructors. This research is the first …

  • Growing Up in Central Australia

Dennis Brooks, David Brooks et al.•BOOK•Growing up in Central Australia•2022

Surprisingly little research has been carried out about how Australian Aboriginal children and teenagers experience life, shape their social world and imagine the future. This volume presents recent and original studies of life experiences outside the institutional settings of childcare and education, of those growing up in contemporary Central Australia or with strong links to the region. Focusing on the remote communities – roughly 1,200 across…

  • Caudillismo Masked and Modernized

Open Access•Michael J Schroeder, Michael Schroeder et al.•ARTICLE•Middle Atlantic Review of Latin…•2018

This article examines the formation of the Guardia Nacional de Nicaragua before and during the period of the Sandino rebellion, US military intervention, and its aftermath (1927-1936). Focusing on the radically abrupt upward displacement of coercive capacities in these eight years of war, we emphasize the agency of Nicaraguans in shaping the kind of institution the Guardia became. We argue that the process of war against a homegrown nationalist i…

  • Bobos in Paradise

Dennis Brooks, David Brooks•CHAPTER•Inequality in the 21st Century•2018

The page is a weekly obsession for hundreds of thousands of Times readers and aspiring Balzacs. For a fee the Times will send undergraduates a reproduction of undergraduates&s; listing, suitable for framing. And the young people, the second-generation Bobos, are willing to see their nuptials recorded. Look at the newlyweds on any given Sunday morning, beaming out at undergraduates from the pages of the Times . The Times weddings page didn&s;t alw…

Ethnic Politics after Communism. Edited by Zoltan Barany and Robert G. Moser. Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press, 2005. 296p. $19.95. In the wake of communism's collapse, dire predictions of intractable ethno-religious conflict throughout the post-Soviet and East Central European territories were the order of the day. Although ethnic violence overshadowed opportunities for political transformation in the Caucuses and Balkans during the 1990s, m…

Objectives. This research examines and evaluates the reasons why the anti‐globalization movement has yet to make significant progress in achieving its primary goals of democratizing international trade negotiation processes. Methods. Data on anti‐globalization protest cycles were collected from news sources for a time period of up to one month that encapsulated the protest events. From these, I constructed brief case narratives of the major event…

John Tranter recently pointed out the irony that it was he who was interested in Rimbaud and Robert Adamson who was interested in Mallarme, since all the biographical hallmarks would seem to suggest the reverse. Adamson the drug-taking ex-convict, concerned as he has been with the lawlessness of heart's desire, would appear to have far more in common with Rimbaud, the would-be visionary who argued a systematic deregulation of the senses through m…

    Dennis Brooks, David Brooks•ARTICLE•Chicana/o Latina/o Law Review•1992

We are faced today with the most pivotal moment in this country's relations with Mexico and Canada. Over the last year, we have witnessed the ongoing dialogue intended to forge a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This free-trade agreement would be the largest and wealthiest in the world. The United States would be entering into a free trade agreement with its first and third largest trading partners, Canada and Mexico, respectively. Th…
