  • Explaining Moral View Change

    Open Access•H G Ying•ARTICLE•The Journal of Value Inquiry•2025

In contemporary studies of moral change, philosophers identify psychological and socio-structural conditions and explain how they cause changes in people’s moral views. However, empirical studies show that the conception of moral agency implied in the existing accounts—that individuals are the function of pre-existing psychological and social structures—should be reexamined. Many people change their moral views based on their core values and conc…

  • Genre as social indexicality

    Open Access•H G Ying•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2009•References: 10

This article presents a cross-cultural analysis of English and Chinese love poems. While the English poems are characteristically expository, topic-centered, direct, passionate, abstract, elaborate, infinite, philosophical, religious, reader-based, and repetitive, the Chinese poems are descriptive, correlative, indirect, subtle, concrete, simple, visual, metaphorical, non-religious, writer-based, and non-repetitive. The social and cultural factor…

  • Relevance and L2 Learners’ Interpretation of Reflexive Anaphora in VP-Ellipsis

    Open Access•H G Ying, HONGGUANG YING•ARTICLE•Journal of Universal Language•2005

Twenty-eight intermediate and twenty-two advanced L2 learners (the experimental groups) and twenty native speakers of English (the control group) participated in a study that investigated second language learners' interpretation of reflexives in the VP-elliptical sentences. 17 experimental sentences in a null context, 17 experimental sentences followed by a referential context favoring the "strict" reading interpretation, 17 experimental sentence…

  • Second language learners’ interpretation of reflexive anaphora in VP-ellipsis

    Open Access•H G Ying•ARTICLE•Language Sciences•2005

  • Relevance mapping

    Open Access•H G Ying•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Forty adult Chinese-speaking learners of English and 20 native speakers of American English participated in a study of second language learners’ interpretation of syntactically ambiguous sentences involving that -clauses that could potentially be interpreted as complements or as relative clause. Two sentence interpretation tasks suggest that the principle of relevance constrained the interpretations. The learners showed a preference for interpret…

  • The semiotic, social, and cognitive dimensions of a Japanese Festschrift

    Open Access•H G Ying•EDITOR•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2001

Suite a certaines etudes (Hinds) demontrant que le lecteur d'un texte en japonais doit posseder la meme vision du monde que celle de l'auteur pour le comprendre, le japonais etant une langue inductive, l'A. s'interroge sur les raisons de ce style inductif. Il se penche alors sur un article en hommage a Toshio Nakao ecrit par un Japonais en langue anglaise pour etudier les dimensions sociales et cognitives du texte en situation translinguistique. …

  • On the origins of contrastive rhetoric

    Open Access•H G Ying•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2001

I appreciate this opportunity to respond to Matsuda’s comments on my article. In his comments, Matsuda agrees with two basic arguments I made in my paper: (1) Kaplan’s view of the relationship between language and culture is not the same as the Sapir‐Whorf hypothesis of linguistic relativity, and (2) it is very unlikely that the origin of contrastive rhetoric can be pinned down to a single source — the Sapir‐Whorf hypothesis of linguistic relativ…

  • The origin of contrastive rhetoric revisited

    Open Access•H G Ying•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2000•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Connor (1996, 1997) claims that the origin of early contrastive rhetoric lies in the Sapir‐Whorf hypothesis of linguistic relativity. This article argues that her claim does not appear tenable. The Sapir‐Whorf view of language as a causal determination is not compatible with Kaplan's (1966) position that rhetoric is evolved out of a culture. Furthermore, the Sapir‐Whorf hypothesis is actually rooted in German ideas which also conflict with Kaplan…

  • Access to UG and language transfer

    Open Access•H G Ying•ARTICLE•Second language Research•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Twenty-seven English-speaking learners of Chinese (the experimental groups) and 20 native speakers of Chinese (the control group) participated in a study that investigated second language learners' knowledge of reconstruction (NP and predicate fronted sentences with ziji ‘self’) in Chinese. Results of a sentence interpretation task indicate that English-speaking learners of Chinese had knowledge of ambiguity of antecedence of ziji inside a moved …

  • The equilibrium of yin and yang and dialogics of silence

    Open Access•H G Ying, HONGGUANG YING•ARTICLE•Semiotica•1997•Cited by: 1

L'A. propose une analyse textuelle d'un recit ecrit en hui, une langue minoritaire parlee par 8 millions de Chinois musulmans. Cette analyse comprend une analyse linguistique et une analyse intertextuelle. L'analyse linguistique a pour but de fournir des donnees translinguistiques prouvant la validite du modele narratif de Labov (1972) et de l'argument de l'A. selon lequel l'equilibre entre le yin et le yang dans la culture chinoise semble rendre…

  • Multiple Constraints on Processing Ambiguous Sentences

    Open Access•H G Ying•ARTICLE•Language Learning•1996•Cited by: 5•References: 49

Forty-five adult second language learners of English participated in this study, which investigated syntactically ambiguous sentences in which a prepositional phrase is interpreted as either an NP (noun phrase) attachment or VP (verb phrase) attachment (e.g., The cop saw the spy with binoculars). One group of 23 students performed comprehension tasks, first by listening to the sentences produced with no distinction in intonation favoring the NP o…
