Two Migration Period Graves from Slatiňany, Chrudim District
In 2019, during archaeological rescue excavations preceding the construction of the Slatiňany bypass, two inhumation graves dating back to the 5th century AD (stages D2 and D3 of the Migration Period) were discovered. The aim of the paper is to present the results of comprehensive interdisciplinary cooperation (anthropology, archaeozoology, metallography, genetics, textile studies, and chemical, elemental, and isotope analyses). The study focuses…
Relationships between Sociosexuality and Dermatoglyphic Traits
In humans, prenatal development of brain dispositions to sex differences in mating behavior is difficult to study directly. Indirect prenatal markers, including dermatoglyphics, present a viable option. In this study we tested a hypothesis that some radio-ulnar contrasts in dermatoglyphic ridge counts could be related with human sociosexuality. Sociosexual Orientation Inventory (SOI) data from 180 young adults, along with fingerprints of their te…
Formor project: Analysis of the formation of complex societies in Early Medieval Moravia
In the ninth century AD, Moravia (now in Czechia) was the heartland of the first Slavic state-like formation in Central Europe. Traditionally, the archaeology of the region has been interpreted via historical records only; the FORMOR project aims to broaden this view by using archaeometry, archaeogenetics, bioarchaeology and introducing new theoretical approaches
Within‐family intergenerational trends in age at menarche relative to political changes in Czechoslovakia after World War II
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to examine a secular trend in age at menarche (AAM) in the former Czechoslovak (and descendant Slovak and Czech) population in relation to its large-scale political and social events taking place after World War II. METHODS: The study included 211 women aged 18-30 (born during 1984-1998), and their relatives: mothers, sisters, and grandmothers, yielding a total of 421 women. Changes in retrospectively recalled…
Stature Estimation from the Hand Length: Testing Cross-Population Methods
Na základě dříve publikovaných statistických parametrů (průměrné hodnoty délky ruky a výšky postavy, regresní koeficienty) z 87 publikovaných studií (212 populačních vzorků) jsme metodami průměrování regresních koefi…
Overall trends vs. individual trajectories in the second‐to‐fourth digit (2D: 4D) and metacarpal (2M:4M) ratios during puberty and adolescence
Relatively slight overall changes in digit ratio in puberty and adolescence themselves are not inconsistent with the use of the 2D:4D ratio as an indirect marker of prenatal sexual differentiation. Nevertheless, individual changes in the ratios varied substantially in this study and differed from the average trends. Future studies should focus on the nature of interindividual developmental differences in the digit and metacarpal ratios
