Rapid developments in corpus linguistics in the 1980s and 1990s have had a considerable impact on the study of language.
Vocabulary and Corpora
This entry provides an overview of corpus‐based research into vocabulary, showcasing the interface between corpus linguistics and vocabulary studies. The entry highlights the instrumental role of corpora and corpus analysis in studying vocabulary, its structure, use, learning and teaching. The topics covered include: corpus‐informed descriptions and categorization of vocabulary, corpus‐based research into collocations and formulaic language, and …
Proficiency, language of assessment, and attention to meaning and form during L2 comprehension
This study is a replication and extension of Morgan-Short et al.’s (2018) investigation into the role of attention in input processing by L1-Polish learners of L2-Spanish, with proficiency and language of assessment explored as two key methodological factors. Our aims were twofold: to investigate learners’ comprehension in different conditions with their L2 proficiency controlled for, and to examine this process when learners were tested using di…
Repetition and Incidental Learning of Multiword Units
This multisite study replicates Webb, Newton, and Chang's (2013) study on the effect of repetition on incidental learning of multiword units (MWUs). Even though more researchers have started to investigate MWUs, most data have been collected from university students. Furthermore, the large effect of MWU repetition on learning reported by Webb et al. has not yet been corroborated. Data in our study were collected from two university samples (EFL s…
Multisite Replication in Second Language Acquisition Research
We conducted a multisite replication study with aspects of preregistration in order to explore the feasibility of such an approach in second language (L2) research. To this end, we addressed open questions in a line of research that has examined whether having learners attend to form while reading or listening to a L2 passage interferes with comprehension. Our results are consistent with findings from the specific paradigm that we replicated in t…
The role of input flood and input enhancement in EFL learners' acquisition of collocations
The study investigated L 2 learners' acquisition of verb‐noun and adjective‐noun collocations following two kinds of instruction: input flood only and input flood plus input enhancement (in the form of underlining ). L 1 P olish learners of E nglish as a foreign language were exposed to infrequent collocations embedded in stories that were read during three consecutive weeks. Their collocational competence was subsequently assessed in a battery o…
Short- and Long-Term Effects of Rote Rehearsal on ESL Learners' Processing of L2 Collocations
Worldwide there is thought to be around 750 million people who speak English as a foreign language (Crystal, 2003, p. 69). For these speakers the difference between make a picture and take a picture may seem arbitrary. However, use of the former is likely to influence how their second language (L2) performance is perceived (Boers, Eyckmans, Kappel, Stengers, & Demecheleer, 2006). Consequently, L2 speakers' use of collocations (“fixed, identifiabl…
