The Effects of Formal Instruction on the Second-Language Acquisition of Temporal Location
The purpose of this research was to contrast the acquisition of temporal systems in L1 and tutored L2 learners. The research focused on the distinction between absolute and relative temporal location: the former relates event time to speech time and the latter relates event time to reference time. An experiment was conducted using a sentence-picture matching task with Polish adults learning English and American children ranging in age from 21⁄2 t…
The emergence of temporal adverbs in child Polish
This research was conducted to determine how temporal adverbs become integrated into evolving temporal systems. During the period from 2;4 to 3;2, the utterances of three Polish children which contained temporal adverbs were classified as specifying reference time prior to, simultaneous with, or subsequent to speech time. This relationship between reference time and speech time was found either to contradict or to correspond to the relationship e…
The defective tense hypothesis
Longitudinal and cross-sectional designs were combined in this analysis of the evolution of children's capacity to represent deictic relationships. The longitudinal component contained the naturalistic observation of three relatively young children (1; 7–1; 9) and three somewhat older children (2; 0–2; 2). These children were tape-recorded in caretaker–child interactions. The analysis of the corpora from these children revealed: (1) imperfective …
