Waiting and Wanting’: Older peoples’ initial experiences of adapting to life in a care home: a grounded theory study
A grounded theory approach, consistent with the work of Strauss and Corbin, was used to undertake semi-structured interviews with 17 older people, to explore their experiences of living in a care home, during the four- to six-week period following the move. Purposive sampling was initially adopted, thereafter, theoretical sampling was employed to recruit individuals identified by care managers within older peoples’ community teams and care home m…

The Healing Journey: Help Seeking for Self-Injury Among a Community Population
Help seeking is known to be a complex and difficult journey for people who self-injure. In this article, we explore the process of help seeking from the perspective of a group of people living in Northern Ireland with a history of self-injury. We conducted 10 semistructured interviews and employed a grounded theory approach to data analysis. We created two major categories from the interview transcript data: (a) "involution of feeling," which dep…
Spirituality and Creativity in Coping, Their Association and Transformative Effect: A Qualitative Enquiry
While the beneficial effects on mental health of spirituality and creativity as separate entities have been well documented, little attention has been given to the interactive effect of the two constructs in coping. Recently, the theory of transformative coping and associated Transformative Coping Model have been developed and examined from both theoretical and quantitative perspectives. To extend this work, the present study critically examined …
Perpetual loss and pervasive grief: Daughters Speak About the Death of Their Mother in Childhood
The impact on daughters of the death of their mother in childhood has been little researched. This article reports a qualitative study of the experiences of women in Ireland who were bereaved of their mother in early life, and the lifelong impact of this loss. The death of their mothers had a profound impact throughout these women's childhoods and adult lives. The women described the silence surrounding the death, their hunger for information abo…
Workplace support for traumatically bereaved people
This paper reports the findings of a study of bereaved parents’ experiences of their return to the workplace following the death of a child to suicide. Six mothers and five fathers aged 44–57 were interviewed about the support provided to them and what they would have found helpful. Their responses suggest organisations need to be more proactive in offering support to traumatically bereaved employees. Organisations should have formal bereavement …
