Validity of the American Sign Language Discrimination Test
American Sign Language (ASL) is one of the most commonly taught languages in North America. Yet, few assessment instruments for ASL proficiency have been developed, none of which have adequately demonstrated validity. We propose that the American Sign Language Discrimination Test (ASL-DT), a recently developed measure of learners’ ability to discriminate phonological and morphophonological contrasts in ASL, provides an objective overall measure o…
When Is a Difference Really Different? Learners' Discrimination of Linguistic Contrasts in American Sign Language
Learners' ability to recognize linguistic contrasts in American Sign Language (ASL) was investigated using a paired-comparison discrimination task. Minimal pairs containing contrasts in five linguistic categories (i.e., the formational parameters of movement, handshape, orientation, and location in ASL phonology, and a category comprised of contrasts in complex morphology) were presented in sentence contexts to a sample of 127 hearing learners at…
Evaluating Deaf Students' Readiness to Meet the English Language and Literacy Demands of Postsecondary Educational Programs
The purpose of this study was to investigate alternative methods for evaluating deaf students' readiness to meet the English language and literacy demands of postsecondary educational programs. In the first part of the study, scores obtained by a large sample of deaf students on the ACT Assessment (ACT Composite score and scores on the ACT English and Reading tests) were compared to their scores on various measures of English language and literac…
Valid Assessment of Writing and Access to Academic Discourse
One way to improve students' access to and retention in post-secondary degree progams is to assess their readiness for such programs accurately. To place deaf and hard-of-hearing students in preparatory courses and to determine their readiness for degree programs more accurately, a direct measure of writing was developed for deaf and hard-of-hearing students at a large technical university. The purpose of this study was to estimate the concurrent…

Children's Comprehension of Time-Altered Sentences
The influence of speech timing on children's auditory processing of sentences was examined with a question-answering comprehension task. Sentences were presented under two conditions, one employing natural speech and the other speech with an electronically-altered temporal pattern. Three types of sentences in each presentation condition were administered to children enrolled in the first, second and third grades. The sentence types consisted of c…

Error, Anomaly, and Variation in the English of Deaf Individuals
This paper reports the results of an experiment designed to characterize recursive processes and their impact on constituent structure in-the English of deaf individuals. Data gathered in this investigation indicate that subordinate clause markers such as that, which, when, and because tend to function as coordinating conjunctions in the English of many deaf individuals. This finding supports Bochner's (1976) contention that many deaf individuals…
