  • The effects of acute plasma tryptophan manipulation on hostile mood

    Open Access•Peter R Finn, Peter Finn et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1998•Referencias: 33

The effects of acute plasma tryptophan manipulation on changes in hostile, anxious, and depressive mood were studied in 48 males. Subjects consumed tryptophan-free or nutritionally balanced amino acid mixtures as a means of manipulating brain serotonin levels. Mood (hostility, anxiety, depression) was assessed pre- and 5 hr post-ingestion using the Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist. Overall, the tryptophan manipulation resulted in significant c…

  • Lead and Cadmium Levels in Violent Criminals

    Open Access•R O Pihl, Frank R Ervin et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1990

Two groups of violent incarcerated male criminals and 30 nonviolent criminals were compared for element content of hair by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Groups did not differ in age, socioeconomic status, or months institutionalized. The groups did differ significantly in lead and cadmium levels. The importance of cadmium in affecting reactivity to stimuli is discussed

  • The Psychobiology of Trance

    Open Access•Ronald C Simons, Frank R Ervin et al.•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatric…•1988•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 5

In place of our usual overview, in this issue we include two papers describing a detailed study of the drum and dance induced trances of participants in the Thaipusam festival, in Kuala Lumpur in 1984. This study developed out of a conference entitled "Shamans and Endorphins" held in Montreal in October 1980 (see TPRR, 21(1984) :119- 122 for a review of the proceedings). Although field conditions pre vented adequate exploration of the hypothesis …

  • Elevation and reduction of plasma tryptophan and their effects on aggression and perceptual sensitivity in normal males

    Open Access•Scott E Smith, Robert O Pihl et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1986•Referencias: 45

Data from experimental animals suggest that 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) may have an inhibitory effect on aggression, while clinical studies have found a correlation between pathological aggression and low brain 5HT. To investigate this relationship further we used amino acid mixtures designed to raise or lower the levels of the 5HT precursor, tryptophan. Normal male subjects were given tryptophan-depleted, balanced, or tryptophan-supplemented ammo …

  • Psychodynamic Significance of Seizure Content in Psychomotor Epilepsy

    Arthur W Epstein, Frank R Ervin et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1956

Two patients with psychomotor epilepsy were studied in an intensive psychotherapeutic setting. The psychodynamic significance of the highly organized seizures and the nature of the psychic phenomena encountered in these seizures were investigated. The content and structure of these highly organized psychomotor seizures have the characteristics of nonreporting emotional thought. This thought level appears normally in dreams and other altered state…
