  • Capital and Value in Late Adulthood

    Open Access•Robert J Griffore•ARTICLE•Family and Consumer Sciences…•2019•References: 31

In the present neoliberal context, life is structured within management of capital. Late adulthood is a period of final decision making about human capital and financial capital. In past generations, older adults were supported by social capital systems of family and voluntary care, largely detached from large systems powered by financial capital. Now, late adulthood is about efficient movement of older adults from the workplace to retirement, fr…

  • Do Young Children's Representations of Discipline and Empathy Moderate the Effects of Punishment on Emotion Regulation

    Open Access•Young‐eun Lee, Holly Brophy‐herb et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This study examined whether children's representations of parenting (perceptions of authoritative discipline and empathy) moderated the association between harsh punishment—including corporal punishment (CP) and verbal punishment (VP)—and children's emotion regulation at the age of five years. Participants were 559 low‐income mother‐child dyads. Maternal self‐reports and home observations were used to measure punishment. Children's representation…

  • Ecocultural Adaptive Research

    Open Access•Lillian A Phenice, Robert J Griffore et al.•ARTICLE•Family and Consumer Sciences…•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 7

Recently ethical codes of conduct for research with ethnic families, communities, and groups have emerged. Therefore, a model that includes ethical codes of conduct for researchers and ethnic participants is needed to advocate for change. By integrating aspects of ecocultural theory with the strengths of various research designs and approaches, revisions and strategic changes during the course of planning, proposing, and conducting research can r…

  • Rules and Television Viewing

    Open Access•Robert J Griffore, Lillian A Phenice•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1996

Data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth were analyzed to examine whether amount of television viewing varied based on whether there were viewing rules. Analyses suggest differences in viewing based on presence or absence of rules on weekdays but not on weekend days

  • Biosocial variances and infant survival

Open Access•Ann Stirling Frisch, David J Kallen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1992

This study used path analysis to assess the chances of survival of babies in a neonatal intensive care unit in Lansing, Michigan, USA. Two paths to neonatal survival were identified and the variables accounted for 20% of the variance in gestational age. The first path showed that prior infant losses were negatively correlated with gestational age while in the second path, gestational age showed negative relationships with pre-pregnancy weight and…

  • Effects of Ordinal Position on Academic Self-Concept

    Open Access•Robert J Griffore, Leonard Bianchi et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1984

This study was conducted to determine whether a relationship exists between birth order and academic self-concept. While previous studies have not consistently given evidence for such a relationship, it has been suggested that birth-order effects might be related to time of measurement and general cultural milieu. For a sample of 2116 children, academic self-concept was highest among boys but not girls who were only children. It was also generall…

  • Self-Concept of Ability and College Students' Academic Achievement

    Open Access•Robert J Griffore, Douglas D Samuels•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1978

To determine the relationship between college students' academic self-concept and academic achievement, Brookover's Self-concept of Ability Scale was administered to 100 undergraduate students in psychology. High moderate correlations were obtained between academic self-concept and over-all grade-point average (.58), but the correlation between academic self-concept and a final examination, although significant, was relatively low (.26)

  • Correlation between Performance on Final Examination and Debilitating Anxiety among Professional Educators

    Open Access•Robert J Griffore•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

For decades psychologists have studied the relationship between achievement anxiety and academic performance. While it is typically concluded that a moderate degree of anxiety about the classroom is desirable (Ebel, 1972), others have distinguished between anxiety which facilitates test performance and anxiety which is debilitating. Alpert and Haber (1960) developed the Achievement Anxiety Test, which measures both types of anxiety. As Sarason, M…

  • Ethnic Differences in Mothers' Anxiety

    Open Access•Douglas D Samuels, Robert J Griffore•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

Research on differences in anxiety levels among women of various ethnic groups is small. The most closely related work is found under the heading of differences in mental disorders. Most of this is concerned only with black/white differences, and it is generally thought that no definite conclusions can be drawn about these differences in the absence of additional epidemiological research (Miller & Dreger, 1973). T o investigate possible differenc…

  • Correlations between Preschoolers' Self-Esteem and Mothers' Educational Attainment

    Open Access•Douglas D Samuels, Robert J Griffore•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

Of the many things a young child learns, his sense of self-worth is the most valuable. It is therefore important to identify the factors which are the most potent influences on his self-esteem. Many studies have demonstrated the strong influence of parental variables. For example, children with high self-esteem are likely to have parents whose selfesteem is also high (1, 2). Other studies have reported salutory effects of maternal warmth, empathy…
