  • Secular and religious views of the future

    Daniel Fulda•ARTICLE•Intellectual History Review•2023•References: 1

Besides geographical boundlessness, the claim to totality that characterizes universal histories comprises a temporal horizon, which reaches from the Creation to the end of the world predestined to Christians. The article examines the role of religious approaches on the one hand and secular points of view on the other in the transformation of eschatology into the idea of an open future shapeable by humans. The analysis focusses first on works by …

  • Identity in Diversity

    Open Access•Daniel Fulda•ARTICLE•Journal for Eighteenth-Century…•2022

Inquiries into the realm of Enlightenment identities usually depart from the texts of this period. Yet pictures created by contemporary artists are equally crucial and largely overlooked sources that have the potential to condense such identities. Using examples from late eighteenth‐century France and early eighteenth‐century Germany, this paper shows how pictures were used to propagate agendas of enlightenment and, sometimes, to draft it in the …

The paper reconstructs the tension between the then emerging approach of emphasising authorial innovation and the traditional learned practice of adapting and reusing existing texts, which was cultivated in the early modern ars excerpendi . In 1717, a case of plagiarism occurred in the midst of a new historiographical genre ( Reichshistorie ) and attracted much attention. Complementing existing scholarship on early modern theories of plagiarism, …

  • Geschichte - erzeugt, nicht gegeben

    Open Access•Daniel Fulda•CHAPTER•Klang Als Geschichtsmedium•2019

Today, literary criticism / studies and historical science are a lot less divided in their specific methods and in their epistemological aims than in the last quarter of the 20th century. This has diminished excitement about the relation of the two disciplines. This paper presents ›cultural patterns‹ as long term hyphenations of concepts, forms of representation, and practices as a possibility for a new way to combine expertise from both literary…

  • Historicism as a Cultural Pattern

Daniel Fulda•ARTICLE•Journal of the Philosophy of…•2010

What is the basis for the enormous success of Historicism? In my paper I attempt to answer this question by deploying the concept of the cultural pattern. A 'cultural pattern' may be defined as the connection of concepts and practices which have gained a relative perpetuity through cultural habitualization. Cultural patterns include a combination of interpretative schemes according to which the world can be categorized, structured and interpreted…
