When do acquaintance networks grow? Life events, civic participation, and social dynamics
This study examines how personal networks respond to two contrasting forms of social experiences: disruptive life events and participation in civic organizations. We theorize that acquaintance networks operate as semi-stable systems, buffering short-term shocks but expanding durably through structured, repeated exposure in organizational settings. Using two waves of nationally representative panel data from Chile, we measure the network size with…
Networked inequality
Existing research on attitudes towards inequality has predominantly focused on individual class or socioeconomic position, with little attention paid to the role of personal networks. The limited existing research has primarily focused on the influence of specific class ties, while overlooking a crucial dimension: network size. Moreover, the lack of quantitative data containing information about socioeconomic standing, network configuration and a…
Stumbles, Gait, and Cognition
Falls are a public health problem, impacting quality of life, independence, and health costs. Subjective memory complaints (SMCs) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) increase with age and may coexist. The risk of falls coinciding with SMCs is less understood. This study explored the risk factors associated with falls in adults with SMCs or MCI. A case-control study in adults over 50 was conducted. All participants underwent a neuropsychological a…
Trachoma elimination in Latin America
Objective. To identify and prioritize municipalities in 22 countries of Latin America for trachoma surveillance activities, to measure the absence or prevalence of trachoma, and to support validation and trachoma elimination efforts in the Region of the Americas. Methods. A prioritization scale was developed in 2017 to rank each municipality by considering a combination of three characteristics: (a) its trachoma vulnerability index, derived from …
Magnitude, temporal trends, and projections of the global prevalence of blindness and distance and near vision impairment
What Students Say About Gender Violence Within Universities
Gender violence in Spanish universities remains a taboo that is in the process of transformation. The first research on this issue was conducted between 2005 and 2008. The main objective was to "break the silence" about violence against women in Spanish academia. To achieve this aim, data collection was conducted through mixed communicative methods. For the interviewees, the context created by this research made it possible for the first time to …
Poor Sense of Direction Is Associated With Constricted Driving Space in Older Drivers
The aims of this study were to determine whether perceived sense of direction was associated with the driving space of older drivers and whether the association was different between genders. Participants (1,425 drivers aged 67-87 years) underwent a battery of visual and cognitive tests and completed various questionnaires. Sense of direction was assessed using the Santa Barbara Sense of Direction (SBSOD) scale. Driving space was assessed by both…
Health Competence As Predictor of Access to Care Among Latinos in Baltimore
Driving Status and Risk of Entry Into Long-Term Care in Older Adults
Objectives. Given the importance of driving in American society, older non-drivers may be unable to meet basic needs while living independently. We assessed whether not driving is an independent risk factor for entering long-term care (LTC) institutions. Methods. Data were used from 1593 older adults who participated in the Salisbury Eye Evaluation cohort study and completed an additional telephone survey. Questions on driving status and LTC entr…
Ocular and dermatologic health effects of ultraviolet radiation exposure from the ozone hole in southern Chile
OBJECTIVES. This study sought to investigate numerous reports emanating from Punta Arenas, Chile (population 110,000, latitude 53 degrees S), that associated acute ocular and dermatologic disease in humans and animals with excess ultraviolet-B (UV-B) exposure in the setting of the thinning of the ozone column. METHODS. Ophthalmologic and dermatologic records in Punta Arenas were systematically reviewed to enumerate sentinel diagnoses potentially …
