A Defence of Witchcraft Belief: A Sixteenth-Century Response to Reginald Scot's Discoverie of Witchcraft
Reginald Scot wrote his 1584 Discoverie of witchcraft in order to counter what he called the fable of witchcraft. “Almost all divines, physicians and lawyers, who should best know these matters,” he lamented, give too much credit to the notion of diabolical witchcraft and are wont to pass “too rash and unjust sentence of death upon witches” (Scot, sig. Bivv). Written immediately before the most deadly phase of witch hunting on the continent, Disc…
From The Founding Editors: Thinking Preternaturally After Ten Years
In his 1605 Advancement of Learning, Francis Bacon advocated for a program that investigated “nature erring, or varying” as part of his general history of nature, its properties and limits. This “history of marvels,” as he went on to explain, would be distinct from that of the “history of creatures,” and the “history of arts,” in that it would center upon nature's digressions. That is to say, it would be concerned with those instances in which na…
The Science of Demons: Early Modern Authors Facing Witchcraft and the Devil
The study of early modern witchcraft and demonology has grown by leaps and bounds over the last generation and shows no signs of abating. Taking their lead from Stuart Clark's seminal 1997 Thinking with Demons, a host of important works have advanced the field significantly from its early concerns with the dynamics of witch hunting and its consequences. Recent studies have turned to examine demonism as an intellectual system, which both drew from…
Writing Demon Possession: The Case of the Witches of Warboys
Early modern demoniacs were diagnosed through a process of negotiation between patient and community. Possession knowledge, then, was locally generated, a function of the space in which it was produced. This article, though, turns to consider the related problem of how a contested possession—one where this dynamic seems to have broken down—was established for a national audience in print. It examines how the author of the 1593 The Most strange an…

Geography is Better than Divinity: The Bible and Medieval Geographical Thought
This article examines the role of the Christian Bible in forging a distinctly medieval geographical consciousness. Though the sacred text had little explicit to say about basic issues of cosmography or even about the location of places beyond the bounds of the Holy Land, the fact that God's act of creation marked not just the beginning of time but also of space, meant that many of the exegetical assumptions and techniques honed to shed light upon…
