  • Theology of Karman: Merit, death and release in the case of Varanasi, India

    Open Access•Erik Reenberg Sand•ARTICLE•Scripta Instituti Donneriani…•2010

In this article, the focus is on the question as to what motives the pilgrims may have for performing pilgrimage, and, in doing this, the author deals especially with the Hindu tradition, namely with pilgrimage to Varanasi, Banaras or Kāśī, which is often considered the Hindu sacred city par excellence by both Hindus and Westerners alike. The sacred power of Varanasi has three sources: the eternal presence of Śiva from the time of creation, the cr…

  • Rituals between religion and politics: The case of VHP’s 2001-2002 Ayodhya-campaign

    Open Access•Erik Reenberg Sand•ARTICLE•Scripta Instituti Donneriani…•2003

The present paper deals with rituals in a political discourse, namely the rituals employed by the right wing, Hindu nationalist movement, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), in its campaign for a Rama temple in the north Indian town of Ayodhya. As is probably well-known, VHP is part of a group of organizations known as the Sangh Parivar, or sangh family, which also includes the presently ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the ultranationalistic or…

  • Riter og myter i vedisk tradition - et forsknings-historisk perspektiv

    Open Access•Erik Reenberg Sand•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•2001•Cited by: 1

The purpose of this article is to review the role of the relation between myths and rituals in the research carried out with regard to the Vedic ritual. In this connection it was found that, apart from the myths about the creation of Prajapati, both indological and religio-historical research were generally characterized by a very little interest in myths. In fact, most of the indological research has been either purely descriptive or historicall…

  • Renhed og urenhed i zarathustrismen

    Open Access•Erik Reenberg Sand•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•1997

This paper deals with the relation between the pure and the impure in the late Avestan text Vendīdād. It is shown how, in this religion, there is an almost exact correlation between the cosmic dualism between the good creation of Ahura Mazdā and the evil creation of Angra Mainyu and the pure and the impure. The world is thus split up between the good and the pure beings on the one hand and the evil and the impure on the other. Between these stand…

  • Offer og initiation i vedisk religion

    Open Access•Erik Reenberg Sand•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•1995•Cited by: 1

After a short presentation of various scholarly views regarding the affinity between initiation and sacrifice in general, the present paper investigates various parallels on the structural, the formal and the symbolic level between the Vedic student (brahmacari) and the consecrated sacrificer (diksita) of the Vedic soma-sacrifice. Especially it is shown how both the upanayana and the Vedic consecration (diksa) transform the Vedic student and the …

  • "Ludvig Holbergs religionssyn som udtrykt i "Niels Klim

    Open Access•Erik Reenberg Sand•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•1994

Niels Klim originally appeared in Latin in 1741 and belongs to the type of literature sometimes called the imaginary travel account. It is shown how this novel, like most contemporary imaginary travel accounts, like Swift's Gulliver's Travels and Montesquieu's Lettres Persanes, was a means of social and religious satire without confronting the censorship which was pretty heavy in Denmark, which at the time was under the sway of German pietism. Ho…

  • Hinduistiske helligsteder i religionsfænomenologisk og forskningsteoretisk belysning

    Open Access•Erik Reenberg Sand•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•1984

The subject of the present article is the tírthas or sacred places in Hinduism. The first part deals with the manifold concept of tírtha, by giving a general phenomenological analysis of the concept in relation to what is called hierophanies and theophanies, and by giving a geographical survey of the more well-known tírthas. The second part shows how the tírtha as a phenomenon reflects the problem of different levels in Hinduism. First the theorie…

  • Asketen og forfædrene: Et Indisk Fortællingsmotiv

    Open Access•Erik Reenberg Sand•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•1983
