Chilean Patagonia, a historically remote region known for its vast natural landscapes of global ecological importance, has a rich environmental history of resistance, epitomized by the monumental Patagonia Without Dams movement, which fiercely opposed transnational hydroelectric projects. While traditional extractivism continues to face strong opposition, capital has shifted towards “green” adaptations, manifesting as eco-extractive practices tha…
Water commons as a socioenvironmental project for the 21st century in Chile
We describe how the water commons agenda has been mobilized by different social groups of Chilean society, including water social movements and indigenous people, and the way it was included in the constitutional debate (2021–2022). Although the draft for the new Constitution was rejected in September 2022, we argue that the water commons agenda is still being mobilized as a socioenvironmental project for the 21st century. Simply put, the water c…

Struggles for the defence of territories and decolonial politics in Southern Chile
This article explores the emergence of decolonial political subjectivities in the struggle for the defence of territories and against extractivism in Greater Concepción, Chile. Drawing on a dialogue between decolonial and feminist scholarship, Latin American political ecology, and the praxis of Chilean socioenvironmental movements, we argue that the struggles for the defence of territories in Abya Yala cannot be understood through the lens of mod…

Forestry development, water scarcity, and the Mapuche protest for environmental justice in Chile
From a theoretical approach based on political ecology and environmental justice, we assess how forestry development has generated socio-spatial dynamics of environmental degradation and water scarcity in southern Chile. Through historical-geographical and ethnographic methods, we discuss how and why the spread of forestry plantations has significantly influenced social and environmental degradation of the Mapuche's modes of living. In response, …
