  • Un/Making the Plastic Straw: Designerly Inquiries into Disposability

    Open Access•Kristina Lindström, Abraham Stahl•ARTICLE•Design and Culture•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This article proposes un/making as a designerly response to urgent environmental issues. By focusing on the simultaneous constructive and destructive aspects of design, this effort attempts to challenge design’s dominant focus on making new things. The implications and potentialities of un/making are explored through a designerly inquiry into ongoing and emerging attempts to ban the plastic straw. Based on this inquiry, the article proposes an ap…

  • Un/Making Pollination - Feminist Methods for Creating Ecosocial Imaginaries

Open Access•Abraham Stahl, Åsa Ståhl et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Feminist Studies•2023•References: 24

How to imagine other kinds of world-making when there is a loss of species; livelihoods are threatened, and lives are on the line? Stoddard et al. (2021) note that there is a lack of social imaginaries. Critical, creative practices act in a tradition of responding to complex questions by turning them into embodied inquiries and opportunities to imagine how things could be otherwise (Mareis and Paim 2021; DiSalvo 2022). The project Un/Making Polli…

  • The thickening of futures

Open Access•Linda Jönsson, Kristina Lindström et al.•ARTICLE•Futures•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 14

This paper engages with biodiversity loss. In particular, it focuses on observations and scientific facts: the decline of pollinators and what that entails for the co-living of humans and more-than-humans. This kind of work often reaches the publics as thin stories of limited futures. The article explores how to situate the issue of out-of-sync plant–pollinator relationships into thick, ongoing presents rather than as a distant future that is out…

  • The Imposition of Hebrew Names on New Immigrants to Israel: Past and Present

    Open Access•Abraham Stahl•ARTICLE•Names•1994•Cited by: 5•References: 1

For many years, it has been the accepted practice to give immigrants to Israel Hebrew names, often without considering the wishes of the immigrants themselves. The automatic imposition of Hebrew names was widespread in the 1950s, when the great wave of immigrants from Europe and the Arab countries came to the newly-created state. During the 1970s, when Oriental Jews gradually gained status in Israeli society, this practice became symbolic of the …

  • Children's Names as a Reflection of Ideological Differences among Israeli Parents

    Open Access•Abraham Stahl•ARTICLE•Names•1992•Cited by: 4•References: 2

In the early days of Israel, Hebrew names replaced foreign ones, and new names appeared, especially for girls. At first, many names expressed the ideology of the new State, but later names expressed more individualistic and materialistic values. Oriental Jews immigrating to the country since the 1950s adopted the prevailing fashion in names. The religious segment of the population did not change at all or changed in a more limited way than the ge…

  • The offspring of interethnic marriage: Relations of children with paternal and maternal grandparents

    Abraham Stahl•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•1992•References: 5

Over the last decades 15 to 20 per cent of all Jewish marriages in Israel were between members of the two different ethnic groups, the Orientals and Ashkenazis. At present at least 15 per cent of the school population is of mixed ethnic origin. This article gives an account of a study involving 136 children in sixth to eighth grade belonging to this group (boys and girls, hypergamous and hypogamous marriages in equal numbers) and tries to answer …

  • Teachers' Prejudices: A Perennial Problem in Israeli Education

    Open Access•Abraham Stahl•ARTICLE•Urban Education•1991•References: 8

Prejudice against OrientalJews is detrimental to learning; the prejudice has not yet been eradicated

  • Parents' Attitudes towards the Death of Infants in the Traditional Jewish-Oriental Family

    Abraham Stahl•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•1991

Historians of European culture in the middle ages and early modern time hold different views as to the attitudes of parents towards the death of infants. Some hold that parents had of necessity to develop emotional distance from their small children, as so many of them died in their first few years. Others interpret the historical sources differently and find that parental indifference towards small children was a cause of the high rate of mortal…

    Open Access•Abraham Stahl•ARTICLE•Urban Education•1985•Cited by: 1•References: 1

  • A Virtuous Woman: The Ideal Wife According to the Rabbis of the East

    Abraham Stahl•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•1985

The article describes the ideal housewife according to the views of traditional Jewish-Oriental Rabbis of the 19th and 20th centuries, as expressed in their sermons and moral treatises. The qualities the Rabbis tried to foster in the women of their communities were rigorous chastity, excluding mixed company; total submission of women to their husbands; a demand that women should completely identify with their husbands, up to the point of self-eff…

  • The Structure of Children’s Compositions: Developmental and Ethnic Differences

Abraham Stahl•ARTICLE•Research in the Teaching of English•1977

My object in the research reported here was twofold: to describe, in an exact manner, the development of structure in children's compositions; and to find out the differences in that development between the two ethnic groups which make up most of Israel's population: the Europeans, belonging to the culturally and economically privileged; and the Orientals, who are for the most part disadvantaged (Kleinberger, 1969; Adler, 1974) . There is an inte…

  • The Cultural Antecedents of Sociolinguistic Differences

    Abraham Stahl•ARTICLE•Comparative Education•1975•References: 8

Class differences in the use of language have been observed in various countries for several decades (Descoeudres 1921; Hetzer and Reindorf 1928; Fries 1940; Bossard 1945; Schatzman and Strauss 1955). They have been brought to the foreground of educational theory and practice regarding culturally deprived children through the work of Basil Bernstein and his associates since the late 'fifties (Bernstein 1971, 1973). These papers have generated muc…
