From Transformative Design to Minimalism (and vice versa)
This article analyzes the reincorporation of the former FARC-EP into civil life as a contested arena, characterized by a pendular trajectory fluctuating between an ambitious design, a minimalist implementation, and a recent comprehensive revitalization. I argue that the 2016 Final Peace Agreement initially bypassed the classic disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) paradigm by embedding collective, territorial, and political dimensi…
A Troubling Nexus
International practice highlights the need to integrate peacebuilding and transitional justice policies to enhance their effectiveness in transforming war-affected societies. However, there is limited empirical analysis of this integration. This study examines the relationship between transitional justice and peacebuilding in Catatumbo, Colombia, using a qualitative approach. We focus on the linkage between territorially focused development progr…

Problemas del cobro del impuesto predial y sus efectos sociales en contextos de conflicto armado. Los casos de Carmen de Bolívar y Turbo en Colombia
Objective/Context: This article addresses problems with property tax collection that reflect mechanisms of inequality and generate social effects in conflict-affected contexts. Methodology: We focus on the municipalities of Turbo and El Carmen de Bolívar, Colombia, characterized by a weak structure of rural property rights, dispossession, and violence. Using a thorough and inductive approach, we analyzed tax statutes, and documentary sources and …
Coalitions for land grabbing in wartime
This analysis considers two contrasting trajectories of coercive and illegal land accumulation across two northern Colombian municipalities in wartime. Together they reveal how the state established strategic alliances of indirect rule with paramilitaries, local elites and non-local investors. In return, these groups gained access to institutions and incentives, using them to undertake processes of massive and rapid land accumulation. How these s…
Estado, poder y dominio.
State, war, and land dispossession
We focus on the role of the state in land dispossession during war. State agencies promote land accumulation not only through coercive paths, but also by combining political and market mechanisms. Each mechanism may link the state with different actors and coalitions. We illustrate how this worked in Tibú, a Colombian municipality in which violence against civilians and land accumulation took place in more or less distinct phases. The case highli…
Agrarian elite participation in Colombia's civil war
Direct elite participation in civil wars remains unexplored terrain. It should be analytically telling, because it involves taking major risks and costs. Here, we consider the direct participation of one rural elite-big cattle ranchers-in the Colombian paramilitary saga. We claim that it was massive, locally specific, regulated by institutions, and riddled by permanent collective action issues. We focus on two important forms of direct participat…
Land transactions and violent conflict, a review of the cases of Turbo, Antioquia and El Carmen de Bolívar, Bolívar
This paper offers an analysis of the links between war, land markets and dispossession based on two case studies: the municipality of Turbo, Antioquia and El Carmen de Bolívar, Bolivar. To this end, firstly, the phenomenon of active paramilitary dispossession is placed in the framework of the general discussion on land grab. Then the general dynamics of the conflict, abandonment and land dispossession in both municipalities is described. Afterwar…
