Blinded by the Light
Modern histories of the shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Capilla (Our Lady of the Chapel) in Jaén, Spain emphasize the continuity of devotions at the site and the importance of tradition in local religious culture. The shrine's origins lie in the testimony of four witnesses who, in 1430, recounted in detail their experiences of seeing a heavenly procession. These witnesses, however, made little attempt to decipher the meaning of what they saw. That…

Enemies in the Plaza
Enemies in the Plaza examines medieval personalities, cities, and pageants at the border of Castile and Grenada, illuminating how public spectacle reflected and altered attitudes towards Jews, Muslims, and converts. Although it once helped to dissipate anxieties, pageantry ultimately contributed to the rejection of religious minorities.
Spectacle, Community and Holy War in Fourteenth-Century Cyprus
This article examines how temporal and ecclesiastic authorities on Lusignan Cyprus used rhetoric and performance to mobilize support for the Alexandria Crusade. While King Peter I appealed to the chivalric ideals of his vassals in order to overcome their reluctance to endanger the kingdom’s economic and military security, papal legate Peter of Thomas led interfaith processions that presented Cyprus’s population as united in its Christian devotion…
Virtue, Virility, and History in Fifteenth-Century Castile
A great deal of recent work has focused on the ways in which early-modern Spaniards viewed putative invaders—both past and present—of their peninsula. David Lupher, Barbara Fuchs, and Stuart Schwartz, for instance, have carefully examined the complex and often contradictory attitudes that sixteenth-century authors expressed toward the role played by Romans, Visigoths, and Muslims in Iberian society and history. Although all of these scholars have…

Poem for Patty Chang and David Kelley Thomas Devaney (bio) There is an urge to read moreinto everything. Outsidewe saw you reading. We thoughtyou were reading two books, but it was the same one. You were wearing hats to shadethe single sentence, you. Earth was the subject matter:how to walk and how to fallwhen you do, and how moving it can beto stay put. Let the world funnel in every wayaround youâ in every wayyou can imagine. In every way that is…
